Thread: Lady Cajuns get verbal commitment from 3-star basketball recruit

  1. Default Lady Cajuns get verbal commitment from 3-star basketball recruit

The UL Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program landed a verbal commitment from one of the better players in Texas, as Cy Ranch High School's Cienna Rivera has committed to join Garry Brodhead's program in 2014.

Rivera, a 5-6 point guard from Cypress, Texas, is a three-star recruit and received an 88 scouting grade by ESPN's HoopGurlz.

I sure am looking forward to this new season of Womens Basketball as I really like what Gary has done already. With the team being so young having new blood infused as well as being a year older and having a better grasp of what coach wants, it will be exciting to watch.

We are heading the right direction, but I sure would like to see us recruit some size.

Size will be tough as more tall girls are favoring volleyball. From what i have noticed. I think volleyball is a better sport for girls anyway. he will find some size though and it will probably be juco.

Garry does not recruit size for the sake of size. He recruits aggressive, hard-nosed, mean, hungry athletes. His philosophy is desire supersedes ability. That's part of the reason why Megan Whittaker saw such little playing time last season and why she is no longer on the team. She simply did not fit his system. If he can find a 5'9" or 5'11" player who would run over her grandmother to get the ball, he'll take that over a 6'3"/6'4" body that just takes up space.

The problem is, we don't have any of those 5'11" ones either. We [physically] look like a middle school team. I agree with you about his philosophy; I just see that so far he has not found girls with size who fit his desire criteria and are willing to come here.

Not yet, but just because the ones he got don't have the size we may want, they have the desire Garry wants. Jeremica Edwards and Melody Williams will provide some help, and Jasmin Mills will be improved. We'll see what this team looks like in October.

Garry and Sallie were recruiting her, but chose to get off her when they could not verify if her grades were going to come in on time. They would have welcomed her but had to make the commitments to the ones they knew were going to qualify.
