The Astros’ early selections in the 2012 MLB amateur draft were an acknowledgment of the organization’s top-to-bottom rebuilding project. The club wasn’t in a hurry to immediately compete at the big league level. As a result, the Astros drafted raw talent such as Carlos Correa and Rio Ruiz, doing so with the understanding the young prospects’ development could coincide with the rise of the major league team.
