Yep. Those teams were 10x better than the teams we have now. They were also much more thuggish but damn they were good.

I don't know how many posters on this board actually knew any basketball players from the Evans era. I played with and against them all the time in Bourgeous as well as went out to the strip with them just as often. They played with swagger and an attitude, you want to call them thuggish that is fine, but that's not an accurate stereotype. As far as smoking weed, well you could group Lance Kelly in with that group.

I did as well, I wouldn't call them thugs but they weren't very smart when it came to not getting caught. If anyone thinks lance Kelly and a handful of basketball players are the only ones who smoke weed you are delusional. They were just dumb enough to get caught.

I mean I'm sure many of them were good guys. But there were a handful of those that did get in trouble often (Southall, Evans' kid, and Spencer Ford are just a few off the top of my head). Thuggish was probably the wrong term but my point remains.

And yea that swagger they played with was great. I'm pretty young so the farthest back I can really remember well was Robert Lee's first year (04-05 I believe) with Mitchell, Wade and them. And that was by far, my favorite UL basketball team I've watched. Those guys were so exciting every night. You were basically promised an alley oop or two every game.

The thing I don't understand is the Cajuns need more help than at almost anytime in their storied history. If you can't make this team how are you going to make another team? I wonder how some of the other transfers are doing? I kind of missed the bearded wonder a little but after he got hurt it seemed like he wasn't the same player. He should have sat out a year and given his body a chance to heal and then he may have done well again but alas, young people are so impatient. Because of the sheer number of transfers I have to wonder what Marlin's role in this is! Afterall, where there is smoke there is fire. He has to have something to do with the overall atmosphere of the team and it can not all be good. It almost seems like there is a power struggle i.e. Marlin says I'm in charge and some team members say no you are not and then it escalates to: OK, I'm leaving! The curious thing is why recruit players that don't fit your style and then 12 months later say (through actions) I made ANOTHER mistake - Go Away! Shouldn't Marlin be a better judge of ability and character? So far only Payton and Long are good picks and there are so many that did not make it!!!

Based on what we have been doing for the last three years, if we do have another scholly to give we should just hold it until someone, probably not going to be Marlin, comes up with a real recruit i.e. one that can make the team and will stay more than 12 months. Oh wait, maybe its because Marlin isn't being paid enough? Oh wait, he just got a raise that makes him the highest paid basketball coach we have ever had. Oh wait, that might not be enough. Oh wait, Paschall Shipley, Hatfield, Fletcher all did more and were paid less. Oh wait, I'm confused again!

We are still a basketball school and Lee and Marlin are trying to make us forget it. Oh wait, throw Farmer in there TOO!

Hold on now willis! IMO, you are making the smoke here ... the two players that are transferring are doing so for playing time purposes ... I know that may not be a two-way street (Marlin may have/probably was the instigator) but most people that follow Cajun basketball think they would not see much playing time next year AND we desperately need big man help which is what their scholarships will be used for.

This really isn't much different from what happens in baseball. When the coaching staff has exit interviews with players they are as honest as they can be; so you will see players transfer in order to get more playing time. We just saw that happen with a few players that didn't see the field much.

I expect this year's basketball team to be surprisingly good, but again, just my opinion.

The thing that I can't understand is that he had a great track record at Sam Houston. He was there a long time and had a lot of wins. He's not a rookie. He should be able to recruit better here than at Sam Houston. It just doesn't add up.

Bob Marlin nearing 200 wins at Sam Houston State
Thursday, March 5, 2009 Comments(2) | E-mail| PrintSam Houston State coach Bob Marlin appears headed for some elite company should his Bearkats pull out a win over Southland Conference foe Texas State on Saturday afternoon.

Marlin needs just one victory to become just the second men’s basketball coach to record 200 wins in his SLC tenure. Marline, who has been at Sam Houston State the last 11 seasons, stands at 199 wins.

The only other Southland Conference coach to reach the mark was Mike Vining, who compiled a 383-291 record at Louisiana-Monroe from 1983 to 2005.
