    See below article from 2009....

Bob Marlin nearing 200 wins at Sam Houston State
Thursday, March 5, 2009 Comments(2) | E-mail| PrintSam Houston State coach Bob Marlin appears headed for some elite company should his Bearkats pull out a win over Southland Conference foe Texas State on Saturday afternoon.

Marlin needs just one victory to become just the second men’s basketball coach to record 200 wins in his SLC tenure. Marline, who has been at Sam Houston State the last 11 seasons, stands at 199 wins.

The only other Southland Conference coach to reach the mark was Mike Vining, who compiled a 383-291 record at Louisiana-Monroe from 1983 to 2005.

I seem to have a lot of opinions today ... so here is my take on this.

His (Coach Marlin's) coaching problems the last two years (maybe three) were with his recruiting coordinator. I believe the recruiting coordinator was given too much latitude; maybe his recruits didn't meet the levels they should have (we would attest to that) ... I don't know about that so I'll not continue along those lines.

What I do know is that when Coach Marlin assumed the recruiting duties himself a month or so back (after some other recruits went elsewhere) we signed two bigs. My point is, I believe Coach Marlin's mistake was in giving up too much power to the recruiting coordinator; I also believe that has been changed.

    Only time will tell.

I do realize it is ultimately Marlin's responsibility. I am also perplexed why he has not had more success here and am only trying to reason it out.

I truly do hope Marlin succeeds but my point has always been there is a time limit on this stuff. Your point, Moore Cajun, has been my point all along - it is Marlin's responsibility. Now lets hope this year we see some NO FOOLIN' progress. As far as I am concerned he has two more years not 4 more years. If Marlin doesn't turn it around by then - we need a new coach and maybe a new AD if Farmer can't read between the lines. OK, so I have been hard on Marlin but he is coaching what I believe is our Premier Sports Program at UL and I personally expect Moore.

Coach just said on ESPN1420 that the big man was from Berlin, Germany.

I think so, but there seems like there is always issues with foreign players. Golf found that out this year.

I ran into Coach last night and he told me our new commitment was from Croatia. Maybe he has ties to both Croatia and Berlin. I don't know how tall he is but I am fairly certain he is an inside player. Other points about this guy that I recall is that he won't be here for summer school as his European HS graduation is next week and that he speaks English well. He will be here in August and will be a regular freshman at that time. He also said they will play four exhibition games in Spain during a mid-August trip and the home and home contract with La. Tech is signed. We start the series in Ruston in early December.

I saw that on your site earlier. He must have been talking about another recruit at the time and I made some assumptions. It doesn't look like we will get a 7' this year. Thanks for the info.
