There seems to be this on going believe that the NCAA requires some incredible venue in order to host. So here is the latest I can find from both the NCAA baseball Championship Handbook and the NCAA Division 1 manual.
2011 DIVISION I BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP HANDBOOK
Site Selection Criteria
[Reference: Site Selection of this handbook and Bylaw 31.1.3 in the NCAA Manual.]
Regarding the regional tournaments, with the criteria listed in Bylaw 31.1.3, the
Division I Baseball Committee also follows the additional criteria:
a. Regional competion shall take place at on-campus sites or alternative sites
approved by the baseball committee.
b. The committee shall attempt to place regional tournaments so that maximum
national balance can be obtained, preferably at least one regional in each of the
eight Division I baseball regions.
c. Prospective host institutions must submit a minimum financial guarantee of
$50,000, which shall be 75 percent of the estimated net receipts as submitted on
the hosting proposal (online proposed budget).
d. Once that guarantee is met, the committee shall consider the additional criteria as
listed in Bylaw 31.1.3.2.1.
e. Lights are highly recommended at all prospective regional sites. These lights
should meet the NCAA standards found by clicking on the "NCAA Broadcast
Manual and Policies" link at www.ncaa.com/broadcast.
f. The committee will consider previous crowd control and behavior of the
prospective host institution.
NCAA Division 1 Manual
31.1.3.2 Site Selection. The governing sports committees shall evaluate prospective sites for NCAA championships
in terms of the specific criteria approved by the Championships/Sports Management Cabinet. The
division championships committees may assign specific priorities to these criteria for their respective championships.
These shall be specified in the appropriate championships handbooks. A governing sports committee that
desires to use additional criteria shall obtain Championships/Sports Management Cabinet approval before doing
so. (Revised: 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)
31.1.3.2.1 Criteria for Site Determination. The following criteria are to be used in the evaluation of
sites for all competition in NCAA championships:
(a) Quality and availability of the facility and other necessary accommodations;
(b) Revenue potential (e.g., a financial guarantee or guideline that ensures fiscal responsibility and is appropriate
for the particular event, as recommended by the governing sports committee and approved
by the Championships/Sports Management Cabinet); (Revised: 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)
(c) Attendance history and potential;
(d) Geographical location; and
(e) Championships operating costs. (Revised: 11/1/01)
The team, players, coaches and staff deserve a ton of credit for turning the ship around in one year. They surprised a lot of people going 2-2 in a Baton Rouge regional, which is very respectable, not what anyone wanted, but a darn good job. The team showed a lot of guts and character beating Sam Houston and staying in the last game until the end.
The determination and grit displayed will help them for a long time after they've played their last games.
