Senate Bill(SB) trying to stop AGL Resources from expanding its salt mine in Lake Peigneur, was defeated in the state senate yesterday.
The bill was voted down by a vote of 19-to-17. The company is requesting a permit, which would allow them to use up to 5-million gallons of water, everyday, from the Chicot Aquifer.
Senator Fred Mills sponsored the legislation. If passed, it would have called for an Environmental Impact Statement(EIS) to look at the possible effects on the Chicot Aquifer, which supplies water to most of southwest Louisiana.
