First of all, let us assume that Robe is not going anywhere as opposed to playing who's the better fit to take his place [and if you ever put on a jock strap, you know who that would be]......So with that being said I will put in my two cents and it'll be quick and to the point. Does UL want to be just another "mediocre" Division 1 baseball program ? If so, then continue to search for a "lower paid" assistant baseball coach when Matt Deggs leaves. If they want to continue to elevate its baseball program...................PAY THE MAN what he truly deserves which is A LOT more than what he is currently being paid. Thanks for the car allowance and the free cell phone but that's not gonna cut it much longer. The Babineaux issue should not even be a factor here. This is not about Babs. There should be zero issues or questions here. Pay him or lose him. This is a business, not a "make believe" scenario. If you want to be a contender and play with the big boys, Matt Deggs needs to be paid accordingly or else settle on being just another Division 1 baseball program, complain each season about why we lose games, shoutinh "fire the head guy" etc. We have him NOW and we need to keep him here in Lafayette.
This administration needs to do the right thing for the program, the fans, and most of all for these players who would go through a wall of fire for this guy. Things have the potential to get really special around here in case some have not noticed.
I'm not saying to pay him "Hud money" obviously due to the fact that football is the main revenue generator at any college. But what I am saying is that this administration needs to GET competitive if our athletic programs are going to BE competitive.
We can hate on the boys down the road in BR all we want. We WILL NEVER get to their level because we don't have a checkbook near big enough and NEVER WILL but in the meantime [at least in baseball], we can certainly look into the future when we play the likes of SEC schools and know we belong if we keep a man like Coach Deggs on board. Do the right thing.
