UL golf signee Thomas Petts of Canada recently finished as runner-up in the British Columbia Provincial Junior championship, qualifying him for an all-expense-paid trip with the British Columbia team taking part in the Canadian Junior Championship which began Tuesday.
Petts, playing with a sore back, had up-and-down rounds in the first two days of the four-day tournament, recording five birdies and six bogeys in the opening round and coming back from a 7-over four-hole stretch to shoot 75 in the second round. He carded six birdies for a 3-under 69, the low round of the day, in the third round and was 3-over and seven strokes behind the leader entering the final round.
In that last 18 holes he was in the next-to-last group and was 2-over after six holes before going on a streak that included birdies on 7, 8 and 9, a par on 10, and birdies on 11, 14 and 17. He then reached the par-5 18th hole in two, hitting a 3-iron to nine feet and making the eagle putt. His rally forced the eventual winner to roll in a sliding five-footer on 18 for the win.
