UL's coaching staff will gain another colleague this fall.
But you won't find this coach or his team at the practice field - more like the library.
UL has hired a new debate coach, Scott Elliott, a communications professor-turned-lawyer who's taking a pay cut to return to the collegiate classroom.
"If you put it in football terms, he's a Spurrier or a Saban for the department. That's the equivalent for the debate world," said Tyrone Adams, associate professor of communications at UL.
Elliott's doctoral degree in communications and his juris doctorate qualify him as a "rare find," Adams said.
Elliott has coached nationally ranked teams at the Florida State and Southeastern Louisiana University and was a national champion debater as an undergraduate.
