Thread: Coach brings debate to UL

  1. People Coach brings debate to UL

UL's coaching staff will gain another colleague this fall.

But you won't find this coach or his team at the practice field - more like the library.

UL has hired a new debate coach, Scott Elliott, a communications professor-turned-lawyer who's taking a pay cut to return to the collegiate classroom.

"If you put it in football terms, he's a Spurrier or a Saban for the department. That's the equivalent for the debate world," said Tyrone Adams, associate professor of communications at UL.

Elliott's doctoral degree in communications and his juris doctorate qualify him as a "rare find," Adams said.

Elliott has coached nationally ranked teams at the Florida State and Southeastern Louisiana University and was a national champion debater as an undergraduate.

This is great because debate is one of UL oldest traditions. I like the sport analogy because debating contests and sporting events went hand in hand. Very often the competitive debate would immediately follow the sporting event.

As far back as 1901 (UL's 1st year) they gave out the The Julian Mouton Medal for debate. LINK

I didn't know UL had a debate team. Has UL ever hosted a tournament?? If not, they definitely SHOULD!!!

I know that it does not work this way, but I am sure that we, UL fans, could suggest some topics to be debated.

I am certain that UL fans could suggest topics to be debated. In fact Ragin Pagin. com and the Delphi formum are treasure troves for debate topics. However, if someone disagreed with a topic selected for debate look out!!! It would put past nonsensical "discussions" to shame.
