  3. Track & Field UL Track Shines in Bayou Bengal


    BATON ROUGE- Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the LSU Bayou Bengal on Friday. Freshmen Chris Roy, Kenneth Bellard and Louis Stevens all earned top 10 finishes and recorded season-high marks in their events.

    Roy placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 15 feet, 7 inches. Bellard finished sixth in the triple jump with a season best of 47 feet, 11 inches, and Stevens placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.47 seconds.

    Head Coach Steve Silvey said he was pleased with the results of the meet and the leadership of these three athletes.

    “These local freshmen were the highlight of the track meet for us,” he said.

    Silvey also expressed his gratitude to head football coach Rickey Bustle for allowing six football players to compete on the track team. These players include: Brad Bustle, Antwyne Zanders, Jordan Folse, Lance Kelly, Jason Chery and Verlin Moore.

    “We really appreciate Coach Bustle’s support of our track and field program" said Silvey. “I feel that for football and track to be successful and win championships both sports have to work together.

    Chery and Moore both competed in the 60-meter dash with Chery placing 22nd in the prelims with a time of 7.14 seconds.

    “Chery has the ability to be the top sprinter in the Sun Belt Conference and even a NCAA All-American in the 60-meter dash indoors and 100-meter dash outdoors if he commits to speed training during the spring” Silvey said.

    Also recording top 10 finishes for the UL men were Cory Richard and Reese Lee, who placed fifth and seventh respectively in the 800-meter run, and Roderick Houston who placed 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.95 seconds.

    For the UL women, Lina Futi placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.94 seconds. Jamie Blue placed 14th in the event recording a time of 1:01.49. Blue also placed 16th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.64 seconds.

    Paula Parker, Casey Brown and Suzanne Bourdreaux placed ninth, 10th and 11th respectively in the 1-mile run.

    Quantisha Rambo placed 8th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.15 seconds.

    The Cajuns track and field teams will next compete in the Cougar Classic in Houston on Saturday, Feb. 9.

  5. Track & Field UL Track Competes in Bayou City Classic


      HOUSTON - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Bayou City Classic held on the campus of the University of Houston on Saturday. The Cajuns had a successful meet with the men and women both picking up seven top 10 finishes.

    “We had some great performances. The team competed extremely hard,” said head coach Steve Silvey.

    The UL women’s 4X400 meter relay team captured a first place finish after recording a time of 3:54.21. The team consisted of Jamie Blue, Jazmin Greer, Constance Robinson and Lina Futi.

    “Greer ran an outstanding second leg to bring the team back into first place,” Silvey said.

    Also for the Cajuns women, Kioloni Readeaux placed second in the “B” long jump with her mark of 17-09.50.

    Greer finished sixth in the 400-meter dash recording a time of 58.22 seconds. She was followed by Blue who finished ninth with a time of 59.74.

    Suzanne Boudreaux captured a sixth place finish in the 5,000-meter run after recording a time of 19:39.02. Jasmine Anderson placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02 seconds, while teammate Quantisha Rambo placed 10th.

    For the UL men, Jason Chery recorded a career-best time of 6.90 to place fifth in the 60-meter dash. Chery went on to place sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.45 seconds.

    Stacey Fuller captured a third place finish in the 400-meter dash with his time of 49.27 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash after recording a time of 22.29 seconds.

    Louis Stevens helped the Cajuns cause with his sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Stevens posted a career-best time of 8.21 seconds. Kenneth Bellard placed fifth in the triple jump with his mark of 47-01.75, and Reese Lee finished 10th in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:35.77.

    “This was an outstanding performance from our men and women,” said Silvey. “It was a good overall team performance. Now we will be taking a week off to prepare for the Sun Belt Conference meet.”

    The Cajuns will head to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships which begin on Saturday, Feb. 23.

  6. Track & Field Pat Arceneaux is Back (Added to Track Staff)


    UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team announced the addition of Pat Arceneaux on Wednesday. Arceneaux, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the team, brings with him 30 years of experience at the high school ranks.

    “Coach Arceneaux will be a great addition to our present coaching staff,” head coach Steve Silvey said.

    Arceneaux will assist with throwing events and the pole vault for the Cajuns.

    In 2006, Arceneaux was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Louisiana Track and Field Coaches Association.

    In 2002, he coached the Breaux Bridge High School boys’ cross country team to a Louisiana 3A state championship. His cross country team was the 3A state runner-up in 1999.

    He coached current UL track and field freshman Chris Roy. Roy won a state championship in the pole vault at the 2007 Louisiana 3A State Meet.

    Arceneaux has coached 38 All-State athletes and four All-Americans at the high-school level.

    He served as an assistant coach for six years under former Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Bob Cole.

    Arceneaux is a former UL track and field athlete.

  8. Track & Field Track at SBC Championships


    MURFREESBORO, Tenn.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns track and field teams competed in the Sun Belt Conference Championships over the weekend. The men placed ninth with 30 points, while the women placed 10th with 15 points.

    Jazmin Greer put six points on the board for the UL women with her third place finish in the 400-meter dash. Greer posted a time of 55.17 seconds.

    Lina Futi added three points after she placed sixth in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.55.

    The women’s 4X400-meter relay team, consisting of Futi, Greer, Taryn Simmons and Constance Robinson, placed fourth with a time of 3:50.40. The team collected five points for the Cajuns. This was a season best for the relay team.

    Kioloni Readeaux placed eighth in the women’s triple jump. She picked up a point after recording a mark of 38 feet, 6 ¾ inches.

    “We had a great performance on the women’s side,” said head coach Steve Silvey.

    For the UL men, Chris Roy posted a second place finish in the pole vault. Roy’s mark of 16 feet, ¾ inch was good enough to collect him eight points for the Cajuns.

    Stacey Fuller placed fourth in the 400-meter dash after recording a time of 48.48 seconds. Fuller collected five points for the Cajuns’ cause.

    Kenneth Bellard placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 48 feet, 10 inches. Bellard added six points to the Cajuns’ total. The mark was a season best for Bellard.

    Roderick Houston picked up four points after placing fifth in the 200-meter dash. Houston posted a time of 21.88 seconds.

    Louis Stevens added four points to the Cajuns’ total after he finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles. Stevens posted a time of 7.59 seconds.

    Ben Leonard picked up two points after finishing seventh in the pole vault with his mark of 44 feet, 9 inches.

    “I was pleased with the men. They scored more points than they did last season,” Silvey said.

    He also mentioned that he was extremely pleased with his underclassmen.

    “We had some good things happen at the meet,” Silvey said. “The freshmen competed really well and really represented the team.”

    Western Kentucky picked up the indoor championships in both men’s and women’s competition. The WKU men earned 128 points, while the women collected 149 points.

    The track team will be back in action at the NCAA Last Chance Meet to be held in both Baton Rouge La. and Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday, March 7.

      The LOUISIANA CLASSICS COMBINED EVENTS COMPETITION will be hosted by the Cajun Track & Field Officials Association and will be held on Thursday, March 20th and Friday March 21st at the UL Track Complex.

    Competition will begin at 12:00 NOON.

  10. Track & Field Opponent: Lady’Back T&F coming to Louisiana Classics


      FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- A select group of Lady’Backs will travel to Lafayette, La. for the Louisiana Classics, held on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette. The meet will take place Friday and Saturday, March 21-22, at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.

    Running prelims will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and running finals will start at 1 p.m. Saturday. All collegiate field events will take place Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

    Arkansas will travel 15 athletes for the event including three members of the NCAA Indoor All-American 4x400-meter relay, Tominque Boatright, Shelise Williams and Paige Farrell. Boatright and Williams will compete in the 200 meters and the 400 meters. Farrell will run the 800 meters.

    In the short sprints, Dominque Lauderdale will run the 100 meters and the 200 meters. Maketha Cooper and Ariana Forbes will compete in the 100-meter hurdles. Jennifer Fall will run the 400-meter hurdles.

  11. Track & Field Two Ragin' Cajuns Qualify for Regionals at La. Classics


    UL - Louisiana hosted the Louisiana Classics track meet Thursday-Saturday, March 20-22 at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. Two athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet.

    Highlighting the meet for the Cajuns were freshman Chris Roy, who qualified in the men’s pole vault, and sophomore Stacey Fuller, who qualified in the men’s 400-meter hurdles.

    Senior Ben Leonards broke the school record in the men’s hammer throw.

    Roy qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet in the pole vault with his mark of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches. Roy’s mark was good enough to place him first. Fuller placed first in the 400-meter dash with his time of 52 seconds. Fuller beat the NCAA qualifying mark by .51 seconds.

    Leonards set a new school record in the hammer throw with his mark of 135 feet, 6 inches. The previous record was set at 132 feet, 4 inches by Brett Broudreaux on March 24, 2001. Leonards finished second in the event.

    Sophomore Roderick Houston placed first in the 200-meter dash with his time of 21.40 seconds, just narrowly missing the NCAA qualifying time.

    Freshman Brent Adams placed first in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Freshman Kenneth Bellard continued to impress with his mark of 21 feet, 7 1/4 inches in the long jump.

    Speaking of the entire meet, head Coach Steve Silvey said he was impressed with his freshman and was proud of his first place finishers and NCAA qualifiers.

    “The freshman did a great job,” Silvey said. “Rod Houston did a great job, so did Stacey Fuller, Taryn Simmons, Ben Leonards, Kenneth Bellard, Chris Roy and Brent Adams. Next week we will compete at LSU and will see more competition.”

  12. Track & Field Lady Cajuns do well at Louisiana Classics


    UL - Louisiana hosted the Louisiana Classics track meet Thursday-Saturday, March 20-22 at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.

    For the Lady Cajuns freshman Taryn Simmons tied the school record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.20. She ties D’Nais Jones, who first set the record on May 12, 1996. Simmons’ time was good enough to place her second. It was Simmon’s first time to compete in the event.

    Senior Amy Doucet placed first in the javelin throw. Doucet posted a mark of 117 feet in the event.

    Speaking of both track squads head Coach Steve Silvey said he was impressed with his freshman and was proud of his first place finishers and NCAA qualifiers.

    “The freshman did a great job,” Silvey said. “Rod Houston did a great job, so did Stacey Fuller, Taryn Simmons, Ben Leonards, Kenneth Bellard, Chris Roy and Brent Adams. Next week we will compete at LSU and will see more competition.”
