Thread: I have a few questions about the dorms (conference center)

Yeah, that is the one they pointed out to us. Is that like, the public gym for the students, and the UL athletes work out in another gym, or what?

Also, yeah I plan on joining some kind of group or something, but I'm really not sure what to join. I'm into computers, comics, movies, video games, web design, and stuff like that. I also enjoy football and paint ball. Any clubs you could recommend?

Well I can put a hold on me going to UL... I do not have ONE core credit (artistic credit) that Louisiana Core curriculum requires, so now I am having to be admitted by committee, hopefully...

Are you from out of state by any chance? The one thing I was kind of upset about with UL was the scholarship program for out of state students. I did manage to get the Out of State Fee Waiver, which is a pretty nice scholarship as it allows me to pay in state costs, but that is the only one I received. Not because of my grades or anything like that, but because that is the only scholarship offered to out of state students.

I really wish they would offer other scholarships to out of state students. Louisiana already has the TOPS program which basically pays full tuition (I believe), and UL also has some pretty decent guaranteed scholarships. And by guaranteed, I mean if you meet a certain criteria, you get X amount of money. I wish that would apply to out of state students as well. I'm assuming a lot of the honors students who go to UL are probably getting paid to go to school. While that is awesome and they definitely deserve it based on what they did in High school, I think it would have been nice if I was offered the same treatment.

I don't really know how all of that stuff works though, some of you might know more about why they don't offer that kind of stuff to out of state students, I just don't understand it.

Yes, I am from out of state. I was however born in Lafayette and moved in late 1999. I also was going to have out of state waived, and still will if I can get admitted, but like I said, its that one credit that may cost me not even being able to get admitted.

Yeah, I was born in Lafayette as well. I lived there until August 2002 when I moved to Texas.

apply for scholarships within the department of your major. There should always be something there, every college has its own scholarships.

Think outside the box. If you need only one credit do not go in this fall, take the course you need. I am sure there is a way, and start in the spring semester. JMO

    Good Luck.

Well I was offered a position to help manage the football team so "Thinking outside of the box" and doing that would be pointless to me since we play football in the fall, but thanks..... ha

  9. This is a GREAT IDEA Re: I have a few questions about the dorms (conference center)

Do the dorms come with cable access? Like, is it basical cable (10-15 channels) or is it a better package (50-60 channels) ?

Also, I know a lot of the campus has broadband internet access, but I remember someone telling me that conference center is not one of the buildings with broadband. Is that true? Would I atleast be able to connect to an on campus wireless signal with decent speeds?

I can't think of any other questions at the moment, but I'm sure I'll come up with some more soon. I would really appreciate any help from anyone who has stayed there, or knows anything about the dorms at all. I just want to be prepared when I come down in a few months.

    Thanks!
I lived in the CC for a number of semesters. Here's the skinny...

    Pro's:
    1. 5 minutes from any class on campus!
    2. Chick-Fil-A is downstairs. Put it on your Cajun Card!
    3. 24-hour open house... just don't get caught!
    4. The thing about no microwaves? ha! Bring one. A hot plate too!
    5. The stairwells make for great acoustics when practicing guitar (yea, that was me at 3AM!)
    6. You can probably get a free haircut from one of the football players.
    7. Make friends with the athletes... it will come in handy. I promise.

    Con's:
    1. Game nights are loud... especially after we win!
    2. You may smell different kinds of "herbs" during your stay...
    3. Fire Extinguishers put out yellow dust... someone will try it out.
    4. The walls are thin.
    5. False fire alarms at 4AM suck.
    6. Getting stuck in the elevator is a weekly thing.
    7. University Police is called at least once a week to the CC for random stuff.
    8. Buy your own roach motels... you will need them.

Make sure you bring power strips (only three outlets per room), a fan, a dorm fridge (get a 3.5cu.ft. model), 4 cinder blocks to raise the bed so you can put stuff (like the illegal microwave) under it, Fabreze, Lysol, a touch-tone phone, Adderall (sp?) (haha!) and ear plugs.

As for anything else, you'll just have to find out yourself. Let me know if I can help.

Sounds good. I'm actually leaving for Lafayette on Wednesday and I haven't really done a whole lot in ways of packing. So do most of the people really bring microwaves? lol, good stuff.

Also, I still never received any information on who my roommate is going to be. Aren't they suppose to send me the person's name and number or something?

Also, do I have to worry about any of my stuff getting stolen, or is my stuff going to be alright?

You aren't going to get info abotu your roommate... housing thinks that its a privacy issue and won't tell you (its BS, I know.). Don't bring it all on your first trip... just the essential. Then, after you find out that your roommare isn't a klepto, you can bring the XBOX360 and other stuff to the room. You just have to play it by ear.

Also, get some of that black A/C filter material (for a window unit) and cut it down so that you can unscrew the HVAC vent, put the filter material up, and put the vent cover back. Trust me... you'll want to as your allergies will thank you later.

There's a hell of a lot of tricks and tips for the CC... Let me know if you run into a problem.
