  1. UL Baseball Jonathan Lucroy makes strides as Brewers minor-leaguer

VIERA - Now in his second season of minor-league baseball, Jonathan Lucroy understands the rigors of road trips.

On a lot of days, he spends more time on the team bus than on the field.

But he has it easy compared with his parents.

"One night, we drove over to Viera to see Jonathan play," said Lucroy's mother, Karen. "We got home at 1:30 a.m. and went to work the next day."

Lucroy has climbed through three affiliates to arrive at the Milwaukee Brewers' Brevard County team in the high Class A Florida State League.

When he was at the University of Louisiana, his parents, Steve and Karen, flew to Louisiana to watch him play. They flew to Montana to see him play rookie-league ball and to Arizona for spring training.

He is a better player than when he left school. He had a stand up triple when I watched him a couple of weeks ago. He can run. Who knew?

    Are you Jon's Pops?

I got a kick out of the line in the article about making a little money signing autographs.

My buddy bought 60 of his rookie cards on Ebay, he said that is how he will fund his retirement. He actually passed a few out to the little kids running around at The Tigue last year.

    Congrats to Luc!

    Uh no.

  6. UL Baseball INTERVIEW

Former third-round pick C Jonathan Lucroy was nice enough to answer questions a few months ago, and it was very well received. I thought it would be fun to have a follow-up interview with Jonathan to see how his time in West Virginia is going. Of course, Jonathan was more than willing to do the interview. He’s someone I’ve really begun to pull for the more I’ve been in contact with him. Here’s what he had to say.

Bernie's Crew: After playing rookie ball in Helena, what is the biggest difference in moving up a level and playing against better competition in High-A West Virginia?

Jonathan Lucroy: Overall every aspect of the game is better. I have to say the pitching stands out the most. In rookie ball pitchers leave the ball up more, as well as have less experience. The pitching will get even better after the draft, just because the teams will be sending their high-round draft picks here instead of to rookie ball.

BC: All of the readers at BrewersNation know that you are hitting the ball well in WV. In fact, your slugging percentage and on-base percentage are higher than last season’s numbers already. How have you been able to adjust to better pitching so quickly?

  7. UL Baseball Get your Jonathan Lucroy Baseball Cards now.

      Jonathan Lucroy
Catcher - Brevard County Manatees (Brewers)

Laying low in the Florida State League, it’s probably easy to overlook Lucroy. You might even find reasons not to collect him, if you look hard enough. The reasons to make a stashfar exceed the list of reasons not to, and his overall presence in the hobby makes me want to shine some light on him.

It can be argued that he’s blocked in the system by Angel Salome. Of course, 2 years ago it could be argued that Salome was blocked by “Captain” Lou Palmisano. Angel’s tearing it up, but he’s always going to be short. 5 foot 7 or 8 depending on who you listen to. Besides, if the Brewers thought they had it made at catcher, what are Eric Fryer and first rounder Brett Lawrie doing in the system?

Jon Lucroy was settled to the back-burners by everyone’s favorite catcher, Matt Wieters. Jon was also snubbed according to many, when he wasn’t even a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award. (Wieters didn’t win either, Ed Easley did, so take it for what it’s worth.)Comparing Jonathan’s stats to the finalists for the Bench Award, will leave you confounded. I guarantee it.

Despite hitting 18 homers for Louisiana - Lafeyette, many questioned his ability to hit for power. Others called him the second best hitting catcher to come out of the draft. (Wieters) Everyone seems to agree that he has an above average arm, defends brilliantly, and has top-notch make-up.

Above average arm? Didn't they time his throw to 2nd and it was as good if not better than most major league catchers time wise? And who questioned his ability to hit for power?

I heard the same thing as well. Lucroy also might be working at the academy that Robe is associated with (the name escapes me right now).

OH .. I have a baseball card on a stand in my office with Lucroy in a Cajun uniform. Sweet it is!

Yeah I do know he has about 2 or 3 cards out. I doubt he would be working at that academy. I would think he would be working with our young catchers individually..

Throwing to 2nd as good or better than most major league catchers would be an above average arm. There's another catcher in the Brewer organization that has what everyone likes to call a 'howitzer' for an arm, Angel Salome. I don't understand the question mark there, I feel it's above average, you think so, so I think we're on the same page.
As for who questioned his ability to hit for power, we're talking about baseball card investors here, and they (we) are afraid of catchers for the most part anyway.
Even his draft report here used words "line driver hitter", "average power", and even eluded to his power as a weakness (in the report) Ridiculous I say.

The favorite catcher among baseball card prospectors in the draft was Big Matt Wieters, who has 24 homers so far, and truly is an outstanding prospect. What I'm trying to tell people is that Lucroy can do that too. The Florida State League, and Brevard County in particular, is notorious for muffling any power numbers. As far as baseball cards go, Matt Wieters' elite autograph card sells between $75 and $100 dollars. Lucroy's gets about 10.
    It's crazy.

Lucroy has a few cards out there. The one's to look at are his 2007 elite autographs (numbered to /500, /100, /50, and /5) which you guys should like, being in a Ragin Cajun jersey, and his 2007 Bowman Chromes and parallels. They're cheap, a lot of people are going to make money off of them. If you'd like to see a nice stash, check out my photobucket, scroll down to the bottom.

    (none for sale though, thanks!)

Thanks for linking my little article, always great to talk to more Lucroy fans. Of course, I didn't hop on his bandwagon until his Hawaiian League participation, but I'm on it now.
I argue all the time with fellow Brewer fans about who the catcher of the future is, and I hope Lucroy proves me right.
