McCann is two years older and only played 97 games this year. Maybe he just needs help until his contract expires end of 2018. Lucroy and McCann splitting games is a solid backstop. Each would be pushing the other guy hard.

With Beltran leaving, expect Gattis to get more at bats as the regular DH. He could be the third catcher if another guy comes in. Lucroy makes a lot of sense for the Astros.

Today on the pre game show they interviewed him. He sounded perplexed about his future. Talked about beginning to be old at 31.

Baseball players can be productive into their late 30's these days. You just can't do that at catcher for very long. Moving positions is sometimes needed for those years to increase. He likely would not have to be the full time catcher in Houston as he and McCann could split the duties. He could also DH at times as well as play first base. He is a good enough athlete I could see him logging some time in left field if he signed with the Astros. He makes a lot of sense for the Astros and the Astros make sense for him if the money is right. Of course they are saving their money to pay Altuve in a couple of years and they have to pay the bulk of Verlander's salary the next two years so they likely won't break the back for him.

Actually the interest in LuCroy is because they are considering non-tendering Gattis, which would cost them 5m to 6m ayear. Gattis is not a good catcher and LuCroy would be much better RH platoon for McCann. McCann could more rest from behind the plate, while DHing.

Lots of publicity this year about the decline of his framing skills. Hopefully, that resulted from two new teams and pitching staffs for him and was a fluke.

I doubt he can go from the best framer to the worst that fast.

    Jonathan Lucroy

Lucroy is on the list because it’s been reported that the Astros have shown interest in him. Despite that, I don’t see this one working out. Lucroy will likely want a starting job, and other teams are bound to offer him more playing time than what he would get in Houston. Unless his market completely craters for some reason — or the Astros trade Gattis — there doesn’t seem to be a fit here.

I don't blame him one bit for following the money. Also We need a new locker room for baseball his new contract could help expedite it

Possible salary comps range from $21 million to low $30's (000,000) for three years. Not Brian McCann $, but still nice work. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/...an-lucroy.html

The problem with his article is Gattis is not set to be the teams full time DH in 2018. In fact, if there is an opportunity to sign LuCroy , they are considering non-tendering him. Gattis would cost the Astros $6 mil plus if he is tendered. That's a lot of money for a part time DH/C that doesn't project as a full time player at either position.
