In RaginCajuns.com's final summer update on former players in professional baseball the focus is on Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy.
Lucroy, a catcher who earned All-American status while playing at the University of Louisiana from 2005-07, is playing his first full season with the Brewers. He was called up to the majors by the Brewers on May 21, 2010 and returned as starting catcher in this season.
Lucroy and his Brewers teammates are currently seeking to hold off the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League Central Division championship. As of Tuesday, Aug. 23 the Brewers were nine games in front of the Cardinals.
Being in a pennant race this season has made Lucroy's second season at the MLB level special.
A postseason run for Lucroy would make him the first Cajuns alumnus to participate in the MLB playoffs since Paul Bako appeared in nine playoff games for the Chicago Cubs in 2003.
RaginCajuns.com recently traveled to Houston to visit with Lucroy and gather his thoughts on this season's pennant race and his time spent as a Cajun.
Very well done.
I'm tellin ya, being there that weekend and seeing Luc hit one out at Minute Maid was an absolute thrill.
I love that kid.
Sneak attack
Without much fanfare, Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy has put together a solid season offensively. Entering Saturday, Lucroy was batting .286 - the fourth-highest mark on the club - with nine home runs and 53 RBI in 357 at-bats.
And, don't forget, Lucroy has batted in the eighth spot for the most part this season, taking whatever he gets to hit with the pitcher on deck. He also started the season late after breaking a finger during spring training.
Last season, when he was force-fed to the majors in mid-May after catcher Gregg Zaun was lost for the season with a shoulder injury, Lucroy had his plate more than full. He finished with a .253 average, four homers and 26 RBI in 75 games and was none too pleased with that performance despite the tough circumstances.
"I'm a little more comfortable this year," said Lucroy. "I'm still not totally pleased with my game. I can do better. Any successful guy is never content with what he has done.
"I feel like I'm capable of much more, both offensively and defensively. I'm trying to maximize my potential as much as possible."
Lucroy has thrown much better in recent weeks after struggling earlier with his grip on the baseball, the result of the broken pinkie on his throwing hand. In his first full season in the majors, Lucroy, 25, is the first homegrown catcher to start for the Brewers since Mike Matheny in the mid- to late 90s.
Lucroy basically catches four of every five games but says he actually enjoys the workload.

Don't know if anyone saw this photo from the weekend. Before leaving Houston for their series with St. Louis, the Brewers went by a western wear store in Houston & everyone purchased an outfit. The article said they only Lucroy didn't have to buy his gear. Thought ya'll would enjoy. (BTW Lucroys near the bottom of the stairwell in the checkered shirt)
