LAFAYETTE GAZETTE September 29, 1906 Football Team Last Tuesday evening the students of the Industrial Institute organized a football team with Albert Boudreaux, captain. The boys will begin practice right away and will be in shape to play in about two weeks. A challenge has been received from the Lake Charles High School to play Oct. 2 at Lafayette and Thanksgiving day at Lake Charles, but the team cannot accept the first date. It is the intention () to meet the teams of all neighboring towns as soon as the boys get in training a little."
On November 3rd of 1906 the first tracks were laid between Lafayette & Baton Rouge. Before this there was no road to Baton Rouge. For Baton Rouge and Lafayette to physically communicate the best route was by train through New Orleans and back up to Baton Rouge.
In the interval Louisiana continued to establish the groundwork for a strong Athletic base in the Acadiana area.
Thanks to the hard work of Louisiana (SLII) one of the strongest bedrock’s in the country for high school athletics does in fact exist down to this day in Acadiana and Southwestern Louisiana.
