ANAHEIM, Calif. — Astros righthander John Ely is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. Ely, 26, began the season with Class AAA Oklahoma City. He was recently placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Ely was acquired by the Astros on Dec. 19, 2012 in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound starter went 14-7 with a 3.20 ERA with Triple-A Albuquerque last season, striking out 165 in 168 2/3 innings.
