Can somebody that knows baseball and physiology comment on how just plain damn skinny he is and how a weight gain in crucial muscle body mass areas would effect his velocity???? Didn't the Ryan guy gain a bunch of weight and became unreal until injury----And then their was Ron Guidry----no weight but so good!!!
First his long arms help...at ball release the farther away the ball is from the body axis (his head/trunk) the faster the object will be traveling tangentially. The tangential velocity is important because at release it will travel at the distal linear velocity (tangential velocity). Since his arms are so long this helps.
The second factor besides muscle strength that is of most importance to throwing velocity is range of motion, particularly external shoulder rotation. The range of motion gives the muscle force he does have the significant time to accelerate the ball. Imagine having a car with a powerful engine...if you do not give that car significant road to speed up on, then the car will not reach significant maximal velocity. In a sequential movement strategy such as throwing a baseball, the road you give the body (range of motion) is more important that the muscles (engine) you develop. This is NOT TO SAY muscle strength is not a contributor, however range of motion particularly external shoulder rotation is of most importance.
-------Would the centrifugal force theory be involved here??? I think what you are saying is that with his long arms his radius is longer---so is it here where the speed of the delivery (arm coming through full range of motion) plays a big part??? Also I wonder about the strength in the leg push off for overall speed!!!! BTW I know his battery mate has a lot of Strentz throwing it back (that was for T-Bine)---please follow up as you seem to obviously have some great takes on the subject!!!
LOL. Now that there is funny.Originally Posted by Boomer
