I know people that live and love Lafayette that refer to the city as Laffy. I don't think the intent is to be derogatory. I actually think they say it with affection. Now if someone calls UL, UL-Laff or Oh La la! It gets my blood boiling.

I have never heard "Laffy" before. But that doesn't mean anything. Now when someone calls us UL-Lafayette, Univ. of Lafayette or Oh La La, that really gets me mad. Usually it is someone who shows their love for that school in Baton Rouge. So, I usually respond with "La Sue, LSUAM or LSUAM Baton Rouge". Which creates a whole new mess. They respond back that is not their name, in which case I respond, you better check your diploma (if they have one from there that is) because that is exactly what the diploma has on it; "LSU A&M Baton Rouge"

You are missing the point. Laffy is not just a word....it's the abbreviation of Lafayette and its has a rather not so pleasant meaning in the same circles that use it. So in essence the "hip new thing" the the younger people are calling Lafayette is out of a rap video.

It's not a term of endearment....it's a term of disrespect. The old turds on the board get it. It's sad to see that young people just don't get it....they don't get many many things these days...they just want to do what's easiest. Its's Sad really.....

Semi-related to the subject. While listening to Jay on the radio discuss the possible Sunbelt replacements, he talked about Liberty University and Chancellor Jerry Falwell. I thought he said Jerry Baldwin. So I googled Jerry Baldwin. He is now the Pastor of New Living World Ministries. On his bio-page, he was "coach at the University of Lafayette". This just burns me up.
