Thread: 2014 Baseball Team

  1. Default 2014 Baseball Team

As I was watching my beloved UL Ragin' Cajuns defeat Southern last night to improve to 17-3 on the young season, I began to think about the 2000 season. And by no means, am I thinking this team has that type of ability. I do hope so, but we have a lot of baseball still to play. I decided to look at our roster for next season and I noticed something that I did not realize. We only have 3 seniors on the entire roster and one of them has not suited up one game in 2013 (Chris Griffit). Meaning that we are going to be really good in 2014. The only loses we will have from this year to next is two bullpen pitchers, Kendall Mayer who has pitched in 4 games this year in 4 innings with a 0.00 ERA and Ben Frith who has pitched in 3 games this year with 3 innings pitched with a 12.00 ERA. That is a total of 7 inning pitched out of 179 innings pitched total or less than 4% of our pitching staff. I do not know the status of Griffit, if he could possibly redshirt this year and play next and I do realize that we will have some attrition, but between the current guys getting better over the course of this year and the off season and new guys coming in, including a former LSU pitcher who could possibly move into the starting rotation. I am thinking that this year and next year could be two of the most productive seasons of Cajun Baseball ever.

For those of you, that were on the fire Coach Robe bandwagon, all i have to say is, you might have been a tad early folks.

He is back and he is better than ever!

    Geaux Cajuns.

We were not a tad early. His history demands a better product than he was putting on the field. Don't discount the impact Deggs has had on the turnaround on this team. Not saying that Robe has nothing to do with it, but I will definitely say that he's not the sole savior of this team.

He doesnt get all the credit but clearly it was all his fault when we were struggling, right?

He used to not look like he cared, but now he clearly does, right?

(This is not directed at you specifically, CR, just a general statement)

That's what Robe does, he lures us in, making us think that he has lost the ability to propel this program to greatness, and then he dunks on us and rubs his crotch in our face. Ball sweat is in our mouths...and it's glorious. 17-3!!!

I don't think we are guaranteed a good team next year because of the lack of seniors. There is alot that can go on from now until then.

Why not enjoy this season to the fullest.. lets worry about next year... next year.

Could possibly lose strentz and Compton. I agree with the above...deggs has a lot to do with what is going on. Mike Trahan recruited some of these new guys as well but deggs brought in dome talent and has these guys raking. Tony and Babineaux would be the first to tell you that.

We brought back so much from the team that won the regular season SBC title in 2010. Hell we where even nationally ranked to begin the season in 2011. Dunno what happened.

Leaned a lot on Osborne in 2010. Keefer was a big leader too.

Also, 2011 was the first year with BBCOR bats

But I agree, the majority of pieces were back and we only finished 4 gms above .500

Really, the difference between those years is very thin. We're talking about 5 games that go the other way and we're about the same record at the end of the regular season.

Isn't that the year we brought in Mike Trahan from ULM?

Trahan's first season was 2009 actually.

    Guys,
Robichaux handles the pitching. Last time I checked our pitching staff has never really had a down year, but what has always been our prob when we have a down year......hitting. I know all of you HUD lovers out there think hes the best motivator but you have never seen Robe give a pregame speech before. Guy gives you goosebumps just like HUD. He has never been the problem. IMO after Wade and Szefc left we lacked a hitting system. You mix that in with poor leadership and minimal talent you get the result of last year. The problem was Trahan had no hitting system and with all due respect his recruiting was fringe average to say the least. Now we do have exceptions with Strentz, Compton, and Trahan. But the guys misses were just flat out bad. Jordan Boruque, Daniel Nicholes, Dominique Francia, Thomas Simineaux, Derrick Howell, Snowdon ......guys were just not good. Our talent pool was seriously depleted. We finally have a guy in place with a system, proven in the field of recruiting, and is just as hard on the position players as Robe is on the pitchers. You mix all that together you get a result your seeing now. I think if we keep Compton and Strenz it makes the pie sweeter but with the arms coming in next year, your talking about a super regional/Omaha run. IMO it will be the closest talent to the 2007 team (should have went to Omaha). Im not saying this years team dosent have that capability. I think were short 2 serious arms. Mix the line-up with the arms coming in and it could get scary. Scary good that is.
