I wasn't able to see many offense/defense drills, but things looked good. I didn't see any receiver route drills, mostly the drills they were doing was learning to block down field. One thing that I noticed was that the receivers look like they have put on some size. They look a lot stronger, maybe that will help them to muscle the close balls in. I have heard though that Jason Chery and Derrik Smith have looked good. Also, I heard Lance Kelley has made some good moves.

I will be going back today and I'll post the latest. Hope the word helps get you more excited.

I saw Lance running routes when I went to practice and let me say he was impressive.

  4. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns Practiced Twice on Thursday

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns enjoyed two practices on Thursday, marking the first of four two-a-day practices. The Cajuns will return Friday afternoon with one practice leading into their first scrimmage on Saturday at 8am.

In the morning, the team labored through 12 periods, including two team periods. The first team period featured first-and-10 plays, while the second team periods covered third downs.

“We had a sluggish start in the morning,” said wide receivers coach Daryl Mason. “The guys were not as focused as we wanted them to be.

“The first morning practice is a change in routine. Anytime you change your routine it’s going to cause some people to make adjustments.”

The team was back in the afternoon and endured a grueling 12-period workout in full pads. That practice had a middle drill and two more team periods – one featuring pass-under-pressure and another first-and-10.

“We came back in the afternoon and picked-up the intensity and the execution” explained Mason.

The Cajuns wide receivers are getting a lot of repetition in the passing game. Thursday’s double session had the receivers working routes with the quarterbacks, one-on-one vs. cornerbacks and skeleton drills in a combined 10 periods.

“We need to use practice to make us better,” added Mason. “Derrick Smith and Jason Chery are setting the tempo for the rest of the guys.

“We have some other guys that have stepped up on occasion, but we need more guys to pick it up. We have a few receivers with more ability than they’ve show. I need them to lock in mentally and show everybody how good they are.”

  5. UL Football Derrick Smith is Ready to Receive

He caught 41 passes for 551 yards last year, more than twice as many receptions and yards than anyone else on the UL football squad.

But Derrick Smith wasn't happy with his play, and he definitely wasn't happy with the way the Ragin' Cajuns were eliminated early from the Sun Belt Conference race.

"I think it was just all of us being young," Smith said of the 2006 season when UL lost four of its last six after being picked to win the league title. "Hopefully, we got all that out of our system."

What he's hoping is out is the too-frequent drops that plagued the receiver corps last year, a struggle that affected virtually everyone.

  11. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns Prep for Scrimmage

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns breezed through a short 90 minute practice on Friday, working only eight periods in shorts.

The team spent half of their practice on specials teams, with the remaining four periods dedicated to fine-tuning plays for Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Today was a day to get ready (for the scrimmage),” said head coach Rickey Bustle. “We polished things and did some kicking game stuff.”

Saturday’s scrimmage is slated for 8am at Cajun Field. The team will warm-up for at least 20-25 minutes and begin the first half with 10 specials teams plays. There are 56 offensive plays scheduled for the remainder of the first half.

“I’m looking to see where we are mistake wise,” stated Bustle. “We need to line-up and do the right thing.

“I’m looking for effort and people to do the right thing. The discipline is going to have to be there.”

Three specials teams plays will mark the start of the second half, followed by 56 more offensive plays for a total of 125 plays.

Saturday is also the second of four two-a-day practice dates for the Cajuns. A scrimmage correction practice is scheduled for 3:30pm.

The team will take Sunday off for Media and Fan Day activities before getting back to work on Monday.
