Former UW QB Stocco awaits Packers' call
By Michael Poppy, Badger Herald
May 8, 2007
(CSTV U-WIRE) MADISON, Wis. -- A decision on John Stocco's future with the Green Bay Packers will come within the next day, Stocco's agent John Drana said.
The former University of Wisconsin quarterback participated in the Packers' three-day mini-camp this weekend, and he made quite the impression on Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy.
"I thought John did a nice job," McCarthy said at a press conference Sunday. "One thing you always look for in the quarterback is how he handles the team part of it. Some guys look good in drills, some guys don't look very good in drills, but I could see why he was successful in college. He picked it up; picked it up very quickly." McCarthy said Stocco went through all of the mini-camp drills quite clean and quickly improved from Thursday through Saturday.
Even though Stocco also feels as though he improved from day one of his tryout with the Packers, he believes he still has room to grow.
"I felt like I got a lot better each year that I played, and I still feel like I can get a lot better," Stocco told Packers.com Saturday. "That's been one of my goals my whole career is to improve every year that I've played, and I think I've done that so far, and I think I can still do that."
Stocco was joined at the quarterback position by undrafted free agent Jerry Babb, who -- unlike Stocco -- signed a contract with the Packers prior to the rookie orientation camp.
While Babb -- a four-year starter at Louisiana-Lafayette -- may be a step ahead of Stocco in terms of earning a roster spot behind Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Ingle Martin, McCarthy said neither of the quarterbacks one-upped the other.
"In fairness to them, particularly when you play quarterback and you go to such a new system, the last thing those guys are thinking about is throwing the ball," McCarthy said. "They're trying to get the plays out of their mouth and things like that ... [but] I wouldn't just say those two guys can't play. I wouldn't say that at all about them.
"They both can improve their overall strengths, and they're very young and raw."
Still McCarthy was slow to say whether or not Stocco will have a spot available with the Packers in the future.
"As far as him coming back here, that's something we'll sit down here ... and decide," McCarthy said. "But it would surprise me if he doesn't have an opportunity in the National Football League."
Looks like Jer passed his first test.
He was battling it out with Former University of Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco for the leading mini camp role.
According to the LINK it looks like Babb has cleared the first hurdle err first quarterback competiton.
Former University of Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco won't be attending the Green Bay Packers' minicamp next week. . .
. . . Stocco was one of two quarterbacks who took part in the Packers' rookie camp, sharing the snaps with rookie free agent Jerry Baab of Louisiana-Layfayette. The Packers might be able to get away without signing another quarterback before their minicamp, depending on how much backup Aaron Rodgers can participate.

I am so excited to read about these players and just how many are on their way to an NFL career. I would like to stuff a rag in the mouths of all those people who doubt UL.( Actually like to stuff something elsewhere but we'll keep it clean) This is a testament to the talent here and to the coaching staff. This kind a stuff should be front page of sports in your local news papers (which I doubt it is) and if it isn't shame on the marketing side. This is what brings fans in. Continued good luck to these young men!!!
Anybody noticing a parallel here...
This guy starts out as a stand out quarterback at a local high school. He continues on to play for a Cajun football program that, when he arrives, is not exactly at its peak. He gets thrust into the starting role as a freshman, despite other more experienced quarterbacks on the roster. Over the course of his first three years, he helps the team improve enough to have its first winning season in a while, as well as share in its first conference championship in a while.
His senior season is actually a bit of a disappointment, as the team doesn't finish with a winning record. However, they do pull off one of the biggest wins in school history. Over the course of his four years, he rewrites the Cajun record books. As the NFL draft comes around, several teams show interest, but he is not drafted. However, he is quickly signed to a free agent contract and given a chance to compete for a job.
Anybody know this guy? Sounds like Jerry Babb...but its Jake Delhomme. And we all know what happened to him.
I wonder if Jerry knows he's gonna have to get LaHayeSik, and start buying racing horses.Originally Posted by BabbForHeisman

The Green Bay Packers will take a second look at free agent quarterback Jerry Baab.
They recently signed Baab and receiver Johnny Quinn to free agent futures’ contracts.
Baab, 23, threw for 6,200-plus yards in four years at Louisiana-Lafayette, but he went undrafted a year ago.
The Packers brought him in for a mini-camp last May, but they did not invite him to training camp.
