Atchafalya Basin Program could see cut-backs

The state Department of Natural Resources oversees the management of the state master plan for the Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System. The federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and basin parishes work together to create projects and ensure they are done. Several other state agencies, like the departments of Wildlife and Fisheries and Culture, Recreation and Tourism, also work to establish projects aimed at enhancing the basin.

Questions about the future of the basin have begun, after proposed budget cuts by Governor Jindal would close down the program. The Atchafalya Basin Program (ABP) helps to implement projects like boat landing renovations, tourism, and water quality up-keep. According to Harold Schoeffler who is Chairman of the Sierra Club says, "I think the governor certainly has a responsibility to the people of the state to tell us where he's going with this project."
