C'mon. Turb, do you really expect a bowl to escew a tie-in with a 10 or 12 team conference to roll the dice on an exclusive tie-in with one program? And consider that program is likely to have to schedule a number of road games due to not having conference affiliation with severalof them being against BCS programs which makes the possibility of sub .500 records a likely scenerio. If that was such an attractive arrangement for the NO Bowl simply because of our proximity and fan attendence they could have done that long ago. But they didn't. And there is a good reason for that.

Besides they aren't taking 10-12 teams they are taking CUSA's last 6-6 team.

This doesn't preclude them from having multiple fall back options.

i disagree with your take on it, but lets say your view of it is correct. if that is the case, why hasn't the NO Bowl made that arrangement with UL in the past? After all, we were bowl eligible several times under Rickey, they could have had us then.

It's about options.

The NOLA Bowl will look at the options.

CUSA, SBC, Independent Louisiana.

CUSA gets a tie in. Louisiana gets a tie-in.

Should either entity not be able to fill a slot, SBC gets that slot.

The NOLA Bowl would do this in a second. How do I know this? Because that is, in effect, the current situation they have with the SBC.

If Louisiana is eligible, we get the bid. If not, some other SBC school gets that slot.

As an Independent UL could pull the rug out from under CUSA's current contract with the NOB.

If that threat were real, UL suddenly becomes real attractive to CUSA

I think their comments that they had been waiting for some time to be able to invite us belies that. They have known what we could bring all along. They just chose not to hitch their wagon to a one trick pony. And its not just the attendance but also having to sell the matchup to ESPN. I seriously doubt ESPN would green light them tying themselves to UL. And if it was a good idea financially (which is what drives college athletics today) ESPN would have been all over it years ago.

While I do not like the direction the Belt is heading, i don't see being independent as being a viable option these days for anyone outside of the service academies not named Notre Dame.

As far as ESPN goes, they will hitch on to a winner, until now UL was not an option.

Until after 2013, no one is an option. (new bowl contract time)

Starting in August ESPN will not be the only option. Fox is starting a new sports network. Any loose strings will become a hot commodity.
