UL Presidential Selection Process

E. Joseph Savoie, the commissioner of higher education for the Louisiana Board of Regents threw his hat in the ring for the UL president’s position on the last day to submit applications.
Ten new candidates applied on Monday, the last day to submit applications for the UL presidential post, bringing the total number to 38.

The search committee will meet Wednesday in Baton Rouge to review applications and try to narrow the field.

On the last day to apply for the position of UL president, Joe Savoie ended speculation as to whether he would be a candidate. Savoie, the state's commissioner of higher education, threw in his hat at the last minute Monday along with 10 other candidates, bringing the total number of applicants to 38. Savoie's name has continued to surface since Ray Authement announced his departure, but the former UL director of development would not say whether he intended to apply for the post and leave his state position as a new governor takes office next year. Steve Landry, UL vice president and one of at least three UL-connected applicants, said he wasn't surprised to hear Savoie is in the running. "The conversation has reflected on the possibility of Savoie being a candidate," Landry said. "So it didn't come as a surprise." In a Fall of non-stop bad news, this is easily the best news we've had in a while.

It's not like T-Joe would remain Comissioner of Higher Ed with a new governor.

T-Joe will fight the good fight for us and he knows the State system intimately.

He does know the political ins and outs and that will serve us well. Personally, I would be comfortable with either he or Landry, but my vote is for T Joe!!

He is a great consideration for the job. I grew up with his daughter and they (the family) have always had UL's best interest in mind.
