LaTech is a UL system school, as is Southeastern. Both do many things well - SLU is just a couple dozen students away from us as the largest school in the system - I don't like that. They benefit from a thriving northshore and, unfortunately, a depleted UNO. They also have some programs that are cheap to run but have lots of students. Their athletic program is off the radar. Go Lions? _
Isnt Laffy thriving just as well!?

Yes Lafayette is thriving and has been for a while now. My fear is that Lafayette is out pricing itself in the housing market as campared to the wages it pays employees. Lafayette is still in desparate need of economic diversity as the local economy still relies heavily on the oilfield and the healthcare industry.

In the worst case, he will be a great transition president, in that he will not try to stay in power forever. He will make his mark and retire, setting us up for a more commonly expected tenure for University presidents of 5 years or so. _
5 years or so? You need to look at the history of UL. These guys don't leave until their nose hairs resemble a beard. Joel Fletcher, Rougeau and now Authement.

    A sports fan?

"State commissioner of education E. Joseph Savoie said the 1989 restrictions were never intended to make schools unable to compete in sports, and that the restrictions were justified in the tight-budget times they were formulated but make no sense today."

  7. Default Savoie Throws Hat Into UL Ring

On the last day to apply for the position of UL president, Joe Savoie ended speculation as to whether he would be a candidate.

Savoie, the state's commissioner of higher education, threw in his hat at the last minute Monday along with 10 other candidates, bringing the total number of applicants to 38.

Savoie's name has continued to surface since Ray Authement announced his departure, but the former UL director of development would not say whether he intended to apply for the post and leave his state position as a new governor takes office next year.

Steve Landry, UL vice president and one of at least three UL-connected applicants, said he wasn't surprised to hear Savoie is in the running.

"The conversation has reflected on the possibility of Savoie being a candidate," Landry said. "So it didn't come as a surprise."

As for Savoie, he said everyone applies believing they can contribute something.
