UL Presidential Selection Process

_ Although I do believe Mr. Landry would do a good job, I would like to see the university look to the outside world. If only to get a fresh prospective. This area and indeed state has run on the "good old boy" system for far too long and we are really seeing the pitfalls of it. But that's just my opinion. _

I hear what you are saying, BUT, Steve Landry is not a good ole boy. He is a solid academic and administrative resource. UL would do well to have him at the helm. In the worst case, he will be a great transition president, in that he will not try to stay in power forever. He will make his mark and retire, setting us up for a more commonly expected tenure for University presidents of 5 years or so.

Honestly, I think he will focus on Academics. That is what we are here for, after all...but, I think he will be responsive to athletics and might not be perceived as an obstructionist as was Dr. A. (although I think that was a misperception in some respects). I don't think he will oppose dedicated donations to athletics, I don't think he would oppose an athletic fund, I think he would listen to the community and allow athletics to thrive. We are in a different place than we were when Dr. A set policy. In many ways, we have "arrived" as a comprehensive university and we are now able to broaden our focus. I, for one, think this University is poised for something really great. I just want to be around when it happens, and it could happen in athletics AS WELL as in academics

It is my opinion that people around the country believe that if you dont have a good athletic program you dont have a good school. We arent an Ivey League school. Plus ATHLETICS is the money driver.

I'm not sure I agree with you 100%, but you do have a point. We do need to field a competitive football team to be considered by many as "big time." That does interest high school seniors who are shopping colleges. It also adds to the college experience of students and contributes to a school's identity. It (athletics, specifically, football), plainly and simply, unites the student body. To me, its alot like spinning plates. we can't afford to let either plate, athletics or academics, stop spinning and fall off the pole. Both must keep spinning.

I don't want to be LSU. Not many people who count actually respect LSU academics, but they do have a great athletic program so they tolerate mediocrity in academics. Can we do both well? I don't know. Few Universities do... actually, that might be a good question for Landry: How do we excel in both areas?

Dr. A created a $140,000,000 foundation for the school, we need to get some sort of foundation set up. Like the saying goes you get what you paid for.

I would hope a Landry administration would not oppose an athletic fund - I think we need a vehicle for athletic advancement and maybe for the first time in the university's history, the administration will see athletics and academics, not as mutually exclusive, but as dependent on each other for the advancement of the whole university.

Just to be argumentative about your post, though (ain't that what a forum's for?), I think we have to constantly refine and improve academics. LaTech hit a home-run recently with a program in nanotechnology - stuff that was the subject of science fiction movies 5 years ago. That program is HOT and has the potential to make a huge mark for Tech. They will get a bazillion federal dollars as they develop that program. They were in the right place with the right idea at the right time.... OK, I can already hear the retort: So how many more butts did that put in the seats?" Well, not so many, but... (I got nuthin')...Geaux Cajuns!

LITE - yep, right outta the park! There have been some really cool things at UL, and probably some really good stuff in the pipeline. I don't think the general public really appreciates all that UL is and does, and if you will allow me to augment the point you made earlier - athletics is the window through which many people gain access to the less obvious facets of the university.

LaTech is a UL system school, as is Southeastern. Both do many things well - SLU is just a couple dozen students away from us as the largest school in the system - I don't like that. They benefit from a thriving northshore and, unfortunately, a depleted UNO. They also have some programs that are cheap to run but have lots of students. Their athletic program is off the radar. Go Lions?

Scott Scarborough said today that he resigned September Seventh as the university's executive vice president because he became engaged to a co-worker. He had been suspended days earlier.
