This is essentially the same rule that applies on a passed ball on a third strike; or in any event it is very similar. On a third strike passed ball or wild pitch with two outs or less than two outs and first base open, the batter must be thrown out at first, exactly as if he had hit the ball in play; except that if the runner returns to the dugout without attempting to reach first he is called out for abandonment of the base path and the throw to first is unnecessary.Originally Posted by cjr3888

In the walk off home run case, every runner must round the bases and touch home plate or be declared out for abandonment of the basepath. As a practical matter this rule is rarely enforced vigorously.
