Thread: Dupre Library celebrates millionth volume

  1. Research Dupre Library celebrates millionth volume

Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana will celebrate the acquisition of its millionth volume at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 30 in the library’s atrium.

This milestone elevates the library to a new level of status.

“It signifies the growing strength of our collection and the dedication of the university’s administration to the principles of research and scholarship,” said Director of Libraries Dr. Charles Triche.

The one millionth volume, The Nature of Things at Lake Martin: Exploring the Wonder of Cypress Island Preserve in Southern Louisiana by Nancy Camel (Acadian House, 2006), will be on display. The celebration will include music and refreshments.

From 1000 to 1,000,000 in 100 years. If that rate of increase (roughly 10,000/yr) continues, then in 2107 we'll be at a cool two million volumes. not bad

While paper books, I'm sure, will always be around, I think most of the information available to future library ususers will be electronic. Either through the internent or mass storage systems on site. So I doubt if the standard of libraries in the future will be number of volumes. It could be amount of on site electronic storage or the speed of the availble internent connection. Then again it could be something else that hasn't been developed yet.

I wonder what was the 1 millionth volume. I'm not sure if they have Master's Theses in there, but mine went in a short time ago, almost could have been the big 1MMth book.

I had heard about the one millionth volume coming up, so I decided to return one of the books that I "borrowed" many years ago. I told them that this made me the 1M book man contributor, and I would schedule autograph signing later that day. They got all upetty on me and said that they had already counted that book, but thanks. So, I pulled out an old paperback that I didn't want anymore and gave it to them. They laughed and ran me off. It really set me back.

It took almost 10 years to get to 1000. I wouldn't be surprised if it took 50 years to get to 100,000 and only another 50 to get to 1,000,000

I haven't done the research past 1909 so I'm only guessing.
