He played glamour positions at Notre Dame High, and excelled at them, quarterbacking the football team to a Louisiana Class 3A state championship and playing shortstop for the school's 3A state title-winning baseball team his senior season.

He was the state's 3A Player of the Year in baseball that same year, when he also went 9-1 with a 1.50 ERA as a pitcher.
