Sullivan County Community College center Jason Johnson was named the National Junior College Athletic Association men's basketball player of the year on Sunday at the NJCAA all-star game in Kilgore, Texas.
Johnson, a 6-8 center from the Bronx, averaged 22.6 points and led the nation in rebounding average at 14.3. Sullivan won the NJCAA Division III national championship.
Johnson is being recruited by several Division I schools, including Hampton, St. Peter's (N.J.), Quinnipiac, East Tennessee State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Grambling.
"He was the best player on the best team. I'm real proud of what we as a team have been able to accomplish and especially (proud of) Jason for leading this team," said Sullivan coach Chris DePew, who was named national coach of the year.
