Do you agree with the NCAA's sanctions against UL?

  2. NCAA NCAA hits UL with penalties for inadvertent violations and poll link

UL's athletic program will lose scholarships, forfeit games and was placed on two years probation Thursday for violating NCAA rules.

The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions found three major violations in football and men's basketball.

Violations included ineligible participation by former UL basketball standout Orien Greene with eligibility gained improperly through correspondence courses, impermissible summer workouts by the Ragin' Cajun football team that were deemed "mandatory" by the committee and an institutional failure to monitor those two programs.

"The committee made no finding that the violations were intentional," said Committee on Infractions chair Josephine R. Potuto, professor of law at the University of Nebraska. "But meetings specifically for the purpose of educating the coaches on compliance issues were not held and the institution acknowledged that their education efforts were inadequate."

Penalties include forfeiture of all men's basketball games Greene participated in during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, including the Sun Belt Conference Western Division title in 2004 and back-to-back Sun Belt Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005. UL's participation in the NCAA Tournament - two first-round losses - will also be expunged from the record books and public displays of performance in either tournament such as banners hanging in the Cajundome must be removed.

If you're asking whether "the penalties fit the crimes" then I'd say they could have been a helluva lot worse. On a go-forward basis losing the one scholarship for two years hurts but that's about all I see.

Now, let's go get us an AD. If David Walker isn't interested then conduct a national search.

I have a Question Re: Sanctions against UL

"Four Little Doggies" called into Scott's show earlier today and, from what I could understand, he thinks "there is something there" that has not yet been cleared up." As has been the case in the past, Doggies is disappointed that UL did not get penalized more than they did.

As usual, Lil' Doggie is allowed to call into a local sports talk show and BLAST and CONDEMN the University of Louisiana athletic program. It is insulting and outrageous that he is allowed to do this on a talk show in the same town as the university. It is one thing to criticize from within (i.e. as a fan or supporter). It is quite different when a fan of LaState calls in week after week to insult all of us.

I can't recall him calling in when "Coach Pokey" was caught "poking" a few of her players.

I think someone called in after him and made some specific comparisons to Ohio State that prove there is some inconsistancey in the way sanctions are imposed between the top programs in the country and the little guys.

BTW, there is no NCAA invesitgation of Pokey or LSU. She violated LSU's code of ethics, it's not a NCAA infraction.

No way this is overkill if I ever saw overkill.

I did not hear Four Dogs call. Did he insinuate there is more to come on this? I am fairly confident this is over and nothing else will be said about it. I don't know why he is interested anyway. Perhaps he is suggesting that more happened that we were able to cover up. Can anyone elaborate on his call.

I'm on record as saying I think UL was fast and loose with the guilty plea. So perhaps that is tainting my view of the Advertiser poll results.

I think there is an interesting dynamic in their poll. It seems there is a unique gathering of Pro UL and anti UL voters voting for the same thing.

Anti ULers are voting you got yours, and pro UL Administration group is supporting the schools self sentencing.

Plus, many of the idiots who read the advertiser online don't know anything about the situation, never heard the name orien greene, etc. All they know about it is what the DA "didn't" tell 'em, if you know what i mean.

Why be surprised? Scott's no UL fan either!

Guru, in the paper and on the news, it was stated that LSU and other universities around the country do not have specific policy against Employees of the university and students/athletes having relationships together.

UL does have specific policy, not LSU! I do not think we have heard the last of this, atleast not at the suit level!
