One of the few original USFL teams that made money was the Birmingham franchise (Stallions, I believe) because there was no NFL city close and they did not have to compete for the sports dollar.

Little known item of history... the New Orleans Breakers actually played a pre-season game at Cajun Field against the Memphis Showboats in February of 1984. I'd guess there were probably 5,000 people there. All on the grandstand side. Afternoon game.

I think that was a scrimmage.

Anytime one of these new leagues opens, it reminds me of the dolt that opens a new restaurant in a location that has had 5 failed restaurants in the last few years, thinking they can defy the odds and make it. Just hold onto your money man. It wont work. I cannot understand the thought process of someone investing in this.

I have no idea if your old enough the remember the old USFL but it was dong pretty good until they decided to move the season to the fall to compete with the NFL. Also competing against the NFL for talent was a big mistake. I forget what Steve Young was paid for the LA Express but it was an outrageous sum for the time. There's a market for Spring football.

I completely understand that, but every league to open since then has failed, some quite spectacularly. That's what I'm talking about. This will fail as well, that is, if they even play a game.

I believe it was reported that Young was paid 10 million a year, but it was paid in annuity so he did not receive the full amount every year.

Ultimately everything fails. If this league ever actually gets off the ground, it might have a chance to be a true minor league for the NFL. The NFL has priced themselves out of my budget. A family of four would be looking at $500 a game for the Saints! You make a valid point with the WFL, USFL, WLAF and lastly the XFL folding in short order. Oh yes. NFL Europe ultimately failed . I almost forgot that one. If the USFL does make it back to Louisiana I hope they keep the Breakers name and logo. I think they had some of the best uniforms ever!
