One of the biggest golf names in the Acadiana area will be back to play a hometown tournament next week at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. And someone in the Open pro-ams will be teeing it up with a Players Championship winner.
Craig Perks, the 2002 Players champion and a fixture on the PGA Tour since 2000, said Wednesday that he will be in the field for the Nationwide Tour event that begins with pro-am and practice rounds Monday at Le Triomphe.
"More than anything else, it's kind of giving back to a tournament and a community that helped me get started," said Perks, who worked as an assistant pro at Le Triomphe from 1990-92.
Perks, a former All-American at UL who still lives in Lafayette, played on the Nationwide Tour for four years before earning PGA Tour status in 2000. Two years later, he grabbed one of the PGA Tour's biggest brass rings when he won the Players title in his first outing in the event. Only Perks, Jack Nicklaus and Hal Sutton have won the Players crown in their first attempt.
