The definition of a grey-shirt is basically a walk-on. The athlete will wait to sign with the same program with the next class, but can enroll in January like Dominik Bilich. There are some kids that are willing to wait to sign with schools like LSU rather then sign with lower programs. The Cajuns offered Benny Logan and Edwards a full ride before they committed to LSU and were asked to grey-shirt.
If Lawson's ineligibility is the reason LSU pulled its full scholarship offer, I don't understand why he and his family had such a problem with the grey-shirt offer. What did they think would happen if he couldn't become eligible? Also, does UL routinely offer full ride scholarships to ineligible players? I thought we couldn't do that.

He was upset because he was promised a scholarship and they pulled it for another athlete. If his current status is ineligible, it doesn't mean that he can not become eligible before the first day of class in August. He still has time to go to summer school and gain his eligiblity. Signing him now means that a staff is willing to gamble on him and think he can gain his eligibility by the end of summer. LSU decided they wouldn't take that risk now when they had the opportunity to sign another 4 star athlete at the same position. The NCAA doesn't prohibit an athlete from signing with a program if they are not currently eligible, it is common for athletes to sign and take the ACT or SAT again in April to qualify. In his case, he is short two credits that he will have to take summer school, its not his ACT score. Yes, UL has a few athletes in the 2013 class that are not eligible yet, but they believe that they have shown enough progress to gain eligiblity.

Kid has no one to blame but himself if he's not eligible. His circumstances made his stock drop and the pulled offer was a result. Hope he gets eligible and plans on being in a Cajuns uniform.
