HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The University of Louisiana Lady Cajuns soccer team opened up their spring season with a victory over Southern Miss, 2-1, in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Cajuns are now set to host their annual 8-Aside Tournament.

The win was the first test for the Cajuns after the departure of seven seniors from 2007.

The Cajuns got two goals from Courtney Hofland (Scott, La.) in the game. She netted a free kick to get the Cajuns on the scoreboard. Hofland followed with a match-winning goal off of a pass from Heather Fuller (Deer Park, Texas).

Goalie Stephanie Weston (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) recorded 10 saves in the match, while only allowing one goal.

UL is set to host the Third Annual Ragin' Cajuns Spring 8-Aside Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 8, at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.

    TWO questions:

    1. When did the soccer team start playing a Spring schedule?

    2. Who are the teams coming in for this tournament??

This sort of stuff is akin to spring training for football, or fall ball in baseball and softball. In fact, didn't Softball play in a tourney in the fall??? Its basically a way for the schools to get some offseason training and running in, and play against other schools in the area in tourneys and stuff. They're all 'friendly' matches.

The 8 a side means that each team plays with 8 players. I've always heard of six a side tourneys and matches, where teams will compete with 6 players instead of 11, and play on a smaller field. I guess these girls play with 8 so they can play on the same size field. In Rugby, we'd play with 15 in the regular season, and then move to 7s in the summer, and travel around to different tourneys, and would play on the same size field.

The soccer team has always played a spring schedule. Most are played 11 v 11 with some exceptions: the Northwestern 7-a-side tournament (which they have gone to in years past) and the Cajun 8-a-side. This is the third year running of the Spring Cajun 8v8. The fields are larger than a 6v6 field but much smaller than a regulation 11v11 field. It's a great way to see a lot of shots on the goal and to work on quick passes and communication. The Cajuns have two teams in the tournament, themselves and the Alumni team. Other teams include McNeese State, La Tech (2 teams), Nicholls State, Southern University, and William Carrey. 30 minute Games start at 9am and continue until the championship at 2:50. It's very high-paced soccer and since it will be great weather this weekend I recommend stopping by to watch at least one game from both Cajun teams.

Great win over a CUSA school S. Miss!
So how did LA TECH win the Tournament www.latechsports.com I guess even a blind rat finds cheese every now and them. UL must have felt sorry for them?
Scott has done a great job at UL and got some good local talent to stay in state.Cajun Soccer is headed for great things.

LaTech played with two teams for the tournament (split their entire roster into two teams of 9 and switched players from each team to add more subs when the other half was not playing on a different field), since UL Monroe dropped out only a week before. The finals were UL-Alum vs. LaTech, and let's just say that the Alum aren't exactly in shape to have played 6 or 7, 30min games all day. Scot's team looks great, they have worked hard this spring and I am really looking forward to this upcoming season. With all of their returning talent AND the great recruits he's got coming in, look for Cajun Soccer to continue to rise in the Sun Belt. Support these ladies-they work so hard!

Thank you of rthe answer. So LA TECH cheated to win. I guess when you go 2-14-0 you take your wins where and when you can get them.

I also look forward to the UL Soccer program to do bigger and better things in in the sun Belt and in State.
