Softball at UL is an untouchable sport.
Not because the Lady Cajuns are so good, with "Title Nine" the same would be true is it were one of the worst.
Because it is a protected sport, every dime required to sustain the sport at the minimum level is (should be) locked into the overall budget before the first extra dime is raised.
For this reason any funds generated by the program should be free to be used to raise the program above the poverty level.
Based on 2009 numbers an average ticket price of $8.25 raises over $100,000 for salaries above and beyond State minimum salaries. Not to be used for basic travel, because travel is a set budget cost.
Suites are another income stream.
I just read Lafitte and friends raised $55,000 for softball.
If softball's identity were not swallowed up and were to be allowed to have it's own expanded identity, they could sell thousands and thousands of dollars of Lady Cajuns apparel.
Do they get the funds from the sale of apparel now?
Was there a ticket drive?
I think . . .
