Once again, no one besides Long, Payton, and Mbamalu stepped up. That is not entirely correct as Thompson had a few. However both Wronkowsi and Moore went scoreless and those two are starters. Have to get more people contributing like we did Thursday night. There seems to be some type of mental block from the new guys when it comes to making shots in road games.
I agree defense needs to improve. Best way to do is to get better at rebounding. Opponent would not have so many 2nd shots and we would get more if we had a tough inside player to complement Long. We don't have that guy on this team now. Hopefully either the forward we signed in November or someone who will be brought on board in April can provide that.
Mike I wish I could remember his name, but a retired big time coach said height is overrated in basketball. He coached many stars who were undersized. My point is Marlin will never get more than an occasional talented big man. We have a guy coming next year who can help, but also many coaches proclaim with absolute confidence rebounding is more mental toughness than physical size. We are a good scoring team, but not a good defensive team, and our offense struggles mightily when teams go into a zone, which is why we need to focus on creating turnovers and chaos on defense.
Bobby Paschal who coached successfully here was one who thought height was overrated when it came to rebounding. He thought the most critical aspect of rebounding was reaction time. Brian Hamilton from the last year of Jessie Evans and the first year of Robert Lee was a guy who fit that bill. At six feet five inches he was one of the best rebounders in the conference. We don't have to have a six foot ten guy, we need a guy with good reaction time. As far as pressing more on defensey, that was the plan at the beginning of the year but the injury to Brown makes that difficult. Recent injury to Mbamalu does not help there. We also were getting Long into foul trouble frequently as he is the last line of defense. Still, I agree that we should press more.
