LAFAYETTE — The questions about the pitching depth of Louisiana’s baseball team may start getting some answers as soon as this weekend.
The Cajuns, preparing for their Feb. 7 season opener against Southwest Texas State, will will hold intrasquad games on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon at Moore Field. The only question is whether the staff will start looking at pitchers in live situations then, or if the coaches will handle mound chores in the early intrasquad battles.
“We’ve started doing some pen work with all the pitchers,” said head coach Tony Robichaux, “and if they’re okay to go and the weather’s decent we may try to let them go some this weekend. But we’ll definitely intrasquad this weekend.”
Robichaux did say, however, that there won’t be nearly the emphasis on results from intrasquad games as in fall drills.
“The fall answers a lot of questions for us,” said Robichaux, entering his ninth year as Cajun mentor. “We don’t have to really watch to see who’s going to play for us. That’s what we did in the fall, and those positions aren’t changing much.”
