In a way, Saturday's Red-White spring football game was a microcosm of UL's just-completed season.

The Cajuns got off to a solid start, hit their stride offensively just before halftime and appeared to have things going their way. That's when dark clouds gathered, clouds that eventually brought rain and a premature end to Saturday's game.

Flash back to last fall. A four-game winning streak had UL at 4-2 in mid-October, but three straight Sun Belt Conference losses including two home setbacks rained on what many figured would be the Cajuns' first postseason parade.

It's that kind of disappointment that Cajun head coach Rickey Bustle and a rebuilt coaching staff hope to avoid this year, and they were looking at Saturday's spring game for a jump-start into fall practice. And, at least on one side of the ball, they saw a quantum leap forward.

Offensively, the Cajuns broke loose for the first time all spring. UL's front-line rushers averaged more than nine yards per carry, and the aerial game produced almost 12 yards every time Michael Desormeaux, John Hundley and Connor Morel threw a pass.
