Hundley is a good thrower, is taller than Morel, but cannot run at all [at least compared with the other two]. Mike passes well enough for the offense we run and is so explosive with his legs that he opens up the running game for the TB's. Not to mention the rushing yards and TD's he will have. I do not believe we will change the system to accomodate Hundley's strengths, as both the QB's we recruited this year are Desormeaux types. Given our style, I'd play Morel before Hundley, but then they aren't paying me the big bucks to make that decision. _
Well, where does that leave Hundley on this team. He will be a sophomore this coming season? That means he will be a senior once MD leaves, and the two that came in this year would be sophomores or freshmen depending on red-shirt status. In my opinion, not referring to the player or his character or anything, but i'd rather go from a senior QB (MD) to a soph QB (NewComer), than from a Senior QB (MD) to a Senior QB (JH), to a Jr QB (NC), if you follow that.

The deep pass for a touchdown by Morel was a thing of beauty. I've had the chance to talk to Morel on more than one occasion, really nice guy. I think he could be a starter for this team if need be. My main concern is what happens if we are forced to throw the ball and the short stuff isn't working?

Naw, that will never happen. We will never need to be able to hit a deep ball, or that fifteen yarder over the middle. Wait I think we saw what happens to the running game when we couldn't do that effectively last year.

In any case I am not nearly convinced we will not be able to do it when we want to, and only when we are forced to.

I thought Hundley was excellent at the 15 yard pass over the middle. I also thought that out of the 3 QBs, he had the best passing performance as a whole. Morel's deep pass was awesome but some of the other throws he made would have been inercepted by most sun belt starting defensive backs. I couldn't come to the same conclusion with Hundley's passes.

Desormeaux did show improvement. However it seems that receivers drop a lot of his passes. Remember his first start against FAU? Bill Sampy, a pretty sure handed receiver, dropped a couple of very catchable passes.

All that being said, Desormeaux is a proven leader and should have the start. I'm no expert though.

IMO, and I am just a casual observer not a coach or former player of note, well everybody knows that, Des throws a hard ball. It gets there in a hurry and it impacts the receivers hands with pop. It is the receivers job to catch up to that type of pass. Jake threw a wonderful pass to the receiver, always just enough to get there just ahead of the defender.

There are other instances in which the other QB's will play. That is when we have a big lead. I think the 2nd team QB may spot play for a series or two in the first half in some games just to have them ready. VO, do you think the backup would play if we are down by 17 or so in the fourth quarter?

That has not been Bustle's pattern in the past; but I would like to see him do that. I would REALLY like for him to not have that decision to make.

I was kinda talking more about who you see as a potential starter in a few years, and how its gonna workout with 5 qb's of varying classifications on the team this year.

actually with MD in the game our running game always opened wide b/c every defense could not stop watching him. With Jerry i agree our running tended to close up b/c Jerry was not as big a threat on the ground. But if a defense constantly sends the pressure on MD, he will make them pay with a 60 yd scramble for a touchdown. Last year against troy when we put in Md in, Fenroy ran right down the field b/c the D could'nt take their eye off DES b/c of what he did to them the year before.

Mike D for the next two years, then one of this year's recruits, unless we change our system to suit Hundley's style of play. Both McGuire and Masson are similar to Desormeaux in style and athleticism. The fact that we recruited that type of QB rather than a 'Pro-style' QB like Hundley tells me that we plan to stay with the system we now run. Hundley could start as a senior if neither of the two recruits steps up between now and then.

I really like having a QB in all 5 classes. That system has worked GREAT for Texas Tech, even though kids there generally only start in their 5th year. Now TTU's spread is different from ours in some ways, but in general it is very similar; it creates seams by formation. The Raiders fill those seams with pass receivers, we fill them with Tyrel Fenroy or Mike Desormeaux [and with receivers, too, just not as often as Tech]..

I agree that because of the guys we recruited it shows that we are going to stick with the offense as it is now but it wouldn't be hard to tweak this offense to allow more of a passer to bridge the gap for a year to get to the younger guys. I like Hundley because I think he can only get better but 2 years from now I might feel differently. Start the best player, is my opinion, let everything else fall into place. If you have to go to more of a traditional running game to allow Hundley to prosper then so be it...I want to win I don't care how.
