Thread: VW 2007: Vermilion-24 White-23 in Rain Shortened game

  1. UL Football VW 2007: Vermilion-24 White-23 in Rain Shortened game

VERMILION & WHITE GAME SATURDAY noon

UL's football team wrapped up its major preparations for the Red-White Spring Game Wednesday, and Cajun head coach Rickey Bustle predicted a more competitive contest than his team's first two scrimmage sessions.

The Cajuns' first full scrimmage of spring drills was controlled by the offensive unit, and last Saturday's second scrimmage session was dominated by a defense that pitched a shutout. Bustle said that Saturday's noon game at Cajun Field likely will split the difference.

"Both of them competed pretty good today," Bustle said of Wednesday's 40-play scrimmage that wrapped up practice. "Saturday, the defense was the only one competing. Today, we ran some situational things, and it was pretty even."

  2. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns to clash in Red-White

UL's football squad will wrap up its spring practice session today, and like normal it'll be in the Red-White game. However, this year's game will look different from spring games of the recent past.

During the past several years, the senior members of the squad were divided into groups, and the seniors drafted the rest of their teammates. It made for fairly equal squads, but players did not see action with the units they had worked with all season.

"When we looked at that, it's a little counter-productive," said Cajun head coach Rickey Bustle. "When you've been lining up next to somebody all spring, it makes sense to have them line up the same way in what's supposed to be a game-type atmosphere."

When today's game kicks off at noon at Cajun Field, the Red unit will include the number one offensive and defensive units with a handful of backups available. The White unit will be the number two offenses and defenses, as well as most of the reserves.

    Vermilion won 24-23

The game was called due to rain after the first series of the 2nd half. (I heard Dan say thru Jay)

The white must have scored on that series because it was 23-17 at half time.

    Mike D. had a very nice run for a TD . . . late for work . . . later . . .ps the TD was early.

My bro said Fenroy looks better than ever, faster and breaking more tackles...

Fenroy was impressive, I was also impressed by the deep pass for a TD by Conner Morel. Jason Cherry also seems to be catching the ball better.

Touchdown pass in the Northwest end zone. Do not remember the receiver but he came up a little gimpy, and the extra point was missed. Coach called the game right after that.

Fenroy trucked a DB as he was going out of bounds. Everything was quiet in the stands and then you heard a loud collective ewwwww.

Darrius Duffy made that catch and he also had the long TD pass from Morel.

The team looked good today. Wallace and Fenroy both ran the ball really well. WR's made catches (Don't believe I seen any drops), the reverse play to Cherry was great. Also I love the new formations I seen today, made me happy to see more than the same spread formations. If we keep that up we could be tough offensively. I will have a more indepth report of what I think coming soon :-)

Actually, Marlin Miller caught both touchdowns for the white team, and had an air cast on his ankle after the scrimmage, he could walk under his own power, so it doesn't seem to be that serious.

It wasn't a matter of catching the ball better; it was a matter of the receivers getting separation, something they could not do last year. I said before and will say again, the best offseason pickup for the Cajuns was the WR coach.

What new formations did you see? Anxious to see what the offense looks like

Formations still similar to last year, trips, spread, shotgun with one back and two, I, etc., but the big thing I saw was the speed that the offense got to the line of scrimmage and was ready to run the next play. Every offensive play by both the Red & White teams was ready to be snapped when the whistle was blown to put the ball in play. I tell you what, if our defense had a hard time getting ready to line up and play, the defenses we play in the fall will be too. Play selection was good, kept the defense off balance most of game. Only concern I had from watching was the coverage by DB's, but hopefully this will get better by opening day.
