Thread: LaRyan Gary Joins UL Mens Staff

  1. Ragin' Cajuns LaRyan Gary Joins UL Mens Staff

Just thought I'd let you guys know that Coach Marlin told Tim Buckley and myself today that former Cajun LaRyan Gary has joined his staff as a Graduate Assistant. Marlin's former GA Josten Crow left in the offseason to play overseas in Germany. Today was Gary's first day with the team.

LaRyan is a terrific person. He will bring a lot of insight to these young players. He was key when the players decided they would play how they knew to win and put the team on there back Marlins first year and went on the winning streak. Congrats.

This had been planned for months. Coach Marlin told some supporters this would occur back in the fall. Apparently LaRyan and his wife were living in Houston and a baby was on the way. They were waiting for the birth before moving back to Lafayette. I presume that has now occurred. Also, to be a grad assistant, you obviously have to be in graduate school. I imagine he is now registered for the spring semester which will start next week.

He is coming on as an intern, being paid through the foundation account for basketball. I am not sure he is married he talked today about a girlfriend, but yes a new baby. Both are Ragin Cajuns and are happy to be back in Lafayette.

This could be a very significant move. I knew LaRyan wanted to get into coaching and he loved it here so its a natural fit. What fits even better was his natural will to lead which is hard to find in kids this age when chemistry is so important on a team. I hope and feel its very possible that he is able to inspire a couple of those guys to really take a leadership role.
