Julian C. "Dutch" Reinhardt, the man for whom the street running through the UL athletic complex is named, was associated with UL athletics for 58 years, 27 of them as head basketball coach.
He'd played basketball for the University of Iowa and was named an All-American guard in 1927 before coming south to then-SLI's fledgling athletic department.
He was still there 50 years ago this week, when he was inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics special awards banquet in Kansas City, Mo.
It wasn't his winning ways that earned him the honor. His team had just finished a losing season, settling into last place in the Gulf States Conference. According to the reports of the day, the honor was given for his "character, ethics and approach to the game."
