The Iberia Parish Council is considering a resolution right now to stop AGL Resources from expanding natural gas storage at Lake Peigneur.
The lake borders Iberia and Vermilion Parishes. Recently, the Vermilion Parish Police Jury passed a similar resolution opposing the company's plans to build underground caverns to store natural gas. Several years ago, concerned residents formed a watchdog group, Save Lake Peigneur.
When looking at the lake, you can't help but feel at peace hearing the water gently crash against the banks. A group of residents fear they'll lose their tranquil place.
"It's always been stated this is a done deal." For eight years, Nara Crowley and members of Save Lake Peigneur have fought AGL Resources to stop any expansion of natural gas storage caverns under the lake. They want AGL to pay for an environmental impact statement but Crowley says the company refuses. Another concern, what is causing the lake to bubble.
"We fear for our aquifer is being contaminated and the lack of knowledge of what's causing the bubbling. We are begging the state to stop this permit."
