Thread: The Acadian eyed by Canadian Football League. Winnipeg Blue Bombers - Jerry Babb

  1. UL Football The Acadian eyed by Canadian Football League. Winnipeg Blue Bombers - Jerry Babb

That’s not a bad off-season Blue Bomber GM Brendan Taman is putting together.

For the second straight year the Little Guy from Saskatchewan has done a pretty good job of re-signing the team’s important cogs, plugging holes through free agency, even dipping into the trade market again.

All this while trying not to bump his head on that brand new, $4.05 million salary ceiling the CFL installed.

Best move Taman has made? Probably acquiring Canadian offensive lineman Alexandre Gauthier from Calgary. He paid for it, giving up import starter Garrick Jones and a first-round pick, but it was worth it.

    Solid moves

Landing free agents Andrew Greene, another homegrown hog, and defensive back Davin Bush were solid moves, too. As were the signings of Doug Brown, Kelly Malveaux and Anthony Malbrough before they hit the open market.

But Taman’s winter renovation still has a gaping hole in it, and the cold air is starting to pour in. Funny thing is, the warmer the weather gets the worse this draft is going to feel.

It’s the same hole we’ve been looking into since Bomber training camp a year ago: the one that’s supposed to be filled by a capable No. 2 quarterback.

Former UL OL coach under Bustle, Mike Gibson, came from and left UL to coach in Winnepeg. Last time I had checked, he was their offensive coordinator. He knows Jerry Babb's abilities very well.
