Thread: 2012 New Orleans Bowl

  1. Default Re: Should Locations of Bowl Games Be Kept More Neutral?

With more and more teams having to eat tickets to their bowl games, and the bowl committees seeing thousands of empty seats, I think you will see more bowls looking to "nearby" schools to invite. You can bet the schools will want to stay close to home so they dont have to lose money from the lack of ticket sales, and I'm sure all the bowls have taken notice of UL fans buying tix to the New Orleans Bowl the last two years.

The only obstacle to this will be ESPN. They could care less about tickets being sold. They only want competitive games for their broadcasts. Unfortunately, ESPN either owns or controls all but two of the bowls.

Also, Bowl Committees have also seen that fans of 7-5 SEC, ACC and Big Ten schools won't travel to see their "mediocre" teams play in a bowl. Some of the bowls that have the 7th or 8th picks from the larger conferences would be better off picking Sun Belt, CUSA or MAC teams in their back yards. Specifically the Independence and Liberty Bowls.

Anyone know how the other Sun Belt teams are doing with ticket sales.

Last I heard was ULM was at 10k, ASU was at 4K, and WKU might be struggling to get to 1k.

I thought ULM was closer to 20k, ASU 4k, WKU about 2k.

Karl Benson seemed to indicate (on the radio pregame show for the New Orleans Bowl) that the Independence Bowl was a possibility for a 3rd Sun Belt tie in as early as next year.

He was not so optimistic about the Liberty, seeming to indicate that we had no shot. Them taking Iowa St. over stAte (or La Tech hahahahahaha) seems to back that up.

Only one thing left. Each team plays Madden online in their own athletic offices, with no outsiders allowed. Then ESPN, CBS, etc. show that game on TV and it's a PPV event. You watch it at home for $25. So, there's no travel expense for either team or fan base. The bowls possibly get more money because not just thousands, but hundreds of thousands of fans pay to see the game. The game is at a neutral site because of no crowd noise. Weather is never a factor. There's no expense of printing a ticket, fighting lines for tickets, not getting better seats, etc. There. Problem solved.

ULM is just over 10k with a week to go, stAte is just over 4k and WKU is just under 3k.

How could you tell? Can't find a thing on him.

I was figuring he was the mascot at ECU or a waterboy or cabana boy, but nothing. Nada. Zilch.
