Thread: When will things be sweet?

The one thing I would like to see is a lot more student involvement because if they see and know why things are being done they/we will get more excited about what is going on...it just seems like information does not get out to the students/the public enough.
They have a few students on here who contribute a lot to the site and who do a lot for the school but for the future of the program more students need to get involved. One thing I have always wanted to do is get a fan group started among the students for all sports (we would all get tshirts and be the leaders of cheers at games...maybe even have a member fee to help contribute to cost of shirts and to contribute to the athletic department) but I simply do not have the time with a fulltime job and school to organize it...so if any student on here reads this and would like to see something like this done like I would please organize something. I would be willing to do all I can to help! The one thing you see at all schools is if the students organize and get excited about something, it leads to the community becoming more excited about what is going on.

Ok I've been flamed for being so "negative" and not doing enough.... I mentioned last week I have 4 Season Tickets to Baseball, Basketball and Football.. Thats what i do.... Others have pointed out that there are those in position who have the responsibility for raising funds and thus the budget.. some have even come up with tremendous ideas... The Tabasco Ragin Cajun Stadium... nice ring...

But you say be patient... ok.. how long??? I've been a fan for 40+ years.... There was a time when I thought we had those people with plans and goals.... But here we sit.. 2nd lowest budget in the country someone said.... I just dont get it....

so when will we have a new AD??

    being patient here... just wondering??

Cajun fans have a strange way of jumping on anyone that points out we got problems. To me at least that is part of being a fan. One of the great things about an open board with fans of a different point of view is that you can learn things from each other. I didn't know about the student fee problem which seems to be a huge part of other schools budgets. Certainly we can fix this problem. Wouldn't McNeese, SLU, NW, LAT, ULM and even the evil empire want to repeal this law? The thing that worries me is that it seems we are the only ones thinking about these problems and trying to find solutions. It seems like a hopeless situation to me. Shouldn't our AD be looking into these things?....well wait we don't have an AD!?

Wrong. The evil empire doesn't want to repeal this law. They've got enough money coming in from other places to do more than just compete with the rest of the nation. This law is one of the many ways that they are able to keep the rest of the schools in the state from catching up. You can bet that their boosters would fight the repeal of this law tooth and nail. They don't want an in state competition. That could diminish their profits.

    BINGO!

Rcajun90, that's an obvious idea, unfortunately it's a losing battle, unless you can muster a unified front...

Until that happens I think we should pick our battles... and support our university....

I'm making the trip to hattiesburg either Saturday or Sunday for baseball... you are more than welcome to take a ride.

Pirogue, I totally get your point, and agree that fans can do a lot more by showing up and tossing a few dollars toward the university, than any belly-aching is ever going to get us.

As for a student assessment, forget about it (as you say... losing battle). As much as it is a method for holding state schools (all but one) down to the "prescribed" level financially, that is actually a means for UL to elevate in this state (inside the state, that is). There is no reason UL should not be more financially sound in athletics than any other (but one) state school. The student fee would help UL proportionately better than other state school (all but one) due to the student enrollment, but we are better served by the larger alumni and surrounding substantially better economy.

There is no better means of raising the bar of UL sports (fans and money) than for football to prosper (come on 2007)... it is that plain and simple. After that, simple marketeering 101 would more than fuel the frenzy. I really do believe that. We have put 36k and 38k in Cajun Field just because we were playing top 20 type schools, and that was 11 and 17 years ago. There is no other program in the state than can do that or better (other than one). It is time to reactivate that level of fan fun and ambition. We have got to show up huge in 2007 and keep rolling.

I have confidence that if the "bus driver" of athletics can get it in gear, the rest of the athletic programs can do nothing but gain from the momentum.

Some folks get ticked about talking about football when basketball isn't over, and baseball and softball are just heating up. I don't mean to add to that aggravation. I just believe things will be "totally sweet" when football gets where it should be.

And in both football and basketball they reside at or near the bottom of that conference.

Plus, their Women's BB has declined from being a national power to being [maybe] the fourth best in the state. Almost certainly WBB is behind LSU&A&MC@BR, Tulane and UL this year; and I'm not sure they can even beat ULM.

    Monroe, throttled em this year.

I hate to keep bashing Tech, but they aint all that. Now, If Dwayne from Minden were running that athletic program, they'd be BCS quality.

Where are you Dwayne? I know your lurking around.

You can say what you want about Oakes and the overall quality of their athletic department, but there is no denying hiring Derrick Dooley was a very good move.
He'll have them competive for WAC titles in 3 years, tops.
