Sorry Express, but I've been to every home game and this one in LC and Long goes through 5-10 minute stretches where he shows very little hustle. I sometimes see him pout when he gets subbed as well. Also during a few timeouts on Saturday, he was the only player not in the huddle. Basically sulking by the water cooler. I think he has talent, but I can definitely see where alum81 thinks he has an attitude problem.

But I'm with you on Wronkoski. He's by far my favorite of the new guys. Sat behind some of his family on Saturday. Really nice folks. And that kid has a great attitude and hustle. A lot more hustle and a lot less attitude than Long, IMO.

Put it this way. Marlin is 33-37 in his time here. You can say what you want about his conference record over the last couple of years but they don't separate him from previous coaches, especially as the SBC has become much more watered down and has fallen in prestige over the years. We all feel that Marlin is a great X and O coach but the problem has been the attrition since he's been here and perception that he hasn't recruited well. This team may end up being a little different as they seem to have some potential and it may take a couple of years to really see the product improve on the court but I think people have every right to be critical of coach Marlin, especially when a raise and extension are now confirmed.

    Zephyr -

I've never indicated people don't have a right to criticize. But, I have a right to defend. I like Marlin, but I can completely see your point why people are not impressed. The wins have not come. Also, if I were the A.D., I don' think I would have given that extension.

From an objective standpoint, I think we have a nucleus of three really talented young guys to build around. Long, Payton, Wronkowski. Hopefully, some of the other pups step up.

And, after the last couple of years, we have to hope we don't lose any of that nucleus as that has been an uncomfortable trend to see.

If it was in his contract, he earned it. Disagree with the contract but if his contract said he got a raise and extension for winning the west, he earned it.

These days, coaches have incentives for lots of things. I think Hud has a $10,000 bonus if we averaged 20,000 in attendance or something to that nature so I'm sure there are clauses for Marlin, however, I don't see where you would get a 60% bump in pay just for winning the west. I'm sure there was some sort of bump but that is excessive for one hurdle to clear and certainly getting such a large extension is not usually warranted for that type of accomplishment.

That would be taken up with AD and the agent, I agree with your point but people that say he didn't earn it are wrong if that's what was in his contract.

Well the so called media, and journalist get a chance to ask Coach Marlin about Moss leaving at his lunch press conference . A more professional group would follow up with the question, why are YOU having so much trouble keeping players, especially ones you have brought in. Coach can only skate over Lee's grave, and the supposed bad hire of Johnson, and how apparently he is the only coach in Louisiana who the AAU coaches have it against him for so long. At some point he needs to own the failures as well as the successes.

Instead we will get the usual softball questions.

Yes I still am backing this coach, he is after all our coach.

He didn't earn it if its not an incentive clause that was satisfied within his contract. As far as we know, this is not the case and I doubt they would have an incentive of simply winning the West justifying a $100,000 bump in pay. If it is a contractual issue, you are right he has earned it but it doesn't make it worth it.

I am a season ticket holder...and a fan of Coach Marlin. I want him to stay and think he can build our program. Don't think he's earned such a raise yet, though. I was surprised by the amount.

Are you concerned he has lost yet another player, one that seems to have been of high moral character.

Losing these guys over and over. Very concerning to me. At some point he has to take ownership of the bad as well as take the credit for the good. This was not a Johnson player, and it is being reported he is not trashing the coaches, but still another gone.
