Thread: BPI vs RPI

  1. UL Basketball BPI vs RPI

Rating college basketball teams is mainly about identifying NCAA tournament teams. The tournament itself decides who is the ultimate champion, but who deserves to be there?

There are arguments every year regarding fringe teams. ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi will tell you who is likely to make it. Jay Bilas and other ESPN college basketball analysts want to be able to tell you who should make it. To that end, they asked the ESPN Analytics Department to help them. What we created the College Basketball Power Index, or BPI for short.

RPI up to 61 after all games yesterday. Per Warren Nolan.

Nolan still projecting an undefeated conference season.

NCAA also showing RPI of 61

Well if that’s true then the BPI is terrible too.

Not true. It’s projecting us with the 8th best W-L record. It doesn’t figure out a projected BPI.

Look closer and do math. The list is not in order of projected won loss record, and is called BPI Projection.

True, it does not show an actual BPI number, but does purport to show BPI ranking.

In either case it is a projection, so anything can happen.

I was wrong. Actual math says it is in order of projected won loss record, but labeling is confusing at best.

And our RPI per Nolan is now 60.
