UL's list of verbal commitments to its 2007 football recruiting class jumped to an even dozen over the weekend, and that doesn't include some of the prep players who made weekend visits to the UL campus.
The Ragin' Cajuns got pledges from two Texas players, linebacker Richard Brooks of West Mesquite and tailback Julian Shankle of South Grand Prairie, and Florida linebacker Nate Douglas of Milton over the weekend. Brooks and Shankle took official visits to UL one week earlier.
UL also added defensive end Jermaine Rodgers of Mobile, Ala.-Davidson to its incoming recruit list. Rodgers (6-4, 242, 4.8) was recruited by the Cajun staff last winter before signing with Alabama-Birmingham, but was not academically eligible and never enrolled at UAB. Rodgers is already enrolled at UL for the spring semester.
Offensive tackle Matt McCants of Mobile, Ala.-Williamson de-committed last week after giving the Cajuns an earlier verbal pledge.
UL has 16 available scholarships, and the Cajuns are expected to pick up other commitments before the final opportunity for official visits this weekend. The signing period for the national letter of intent begins Wednesday, Feb. 7.
