Thread: ROUX: Ragin' Cajuns add four commitments during weekend

  1. UL Football ROUX: Ragin' Cajuns add four commitments during weekend

UL's list of verbal commitments to its 2007 football recruiting class jumped to an even dozen over the weekend, and that doesn't include some of the prep players who made weekend visits to the UL campus.

The Ragin' Cajuns got pledges from two Texas players, linebacker Richard Brooks of West Mesquite and tailback Julian Shankle of South Grand Prairie, and Florida linebacker Nate Douglas of Milton over the weekend. Brooks and Shankle took official visits to UL one week earlier.

UL also added defensive end Jermaine Rodgers of Mobile, Ala.-Davidson to its incoming recruit list. Rodgers (6-4, 242, 4.8) was recruited by the Cajun staff last winter before signing with Alabama-Birmingham, but was not academically eligible and never enrolled at UAB. Rodgers is already enrolled at UL for the spring semester.

Offensive tackle Matt McCants of Mobile, Ala.-Williamson de-committed last week after giving the Cajuns an earlier verbal pledge.

UL has 16 available scholarships, and the Cajuns are expected to pick up other commitments before the final opportunity for official visits this weekend. The signing period for the national letter of intent begins Wednesday, Feb. 7.

It's too bad about McCants. I think he was overwhelmed by the recruiting process and apparently another school came in talking S---. This kid Nate Douglas can play. We played against him this last year. He also played on the All-District team with Brad here in Northwest Florida. Great kid and great parents. I think he is going to be a good fit.

I hope the McCants kid does well. It is a really difficult age to make decisions that will affect the rest of your life. Thanks for the info on Douglas.

Great kids, Great parents. Thats a winning combo!

I too think if McCants wants to be somewhere else it is best he go there. Good luck to him unless he is playing against UL, then we need to put a little Cajun butt whipping on his qb and running backs. With that said we can't cry over spilt milk, UL moves on and I like what we are seeing in the quality and character of the guys we are going to sign next week.

It looks like we committed another wide receiver out of the same high school as richard brooks..... http://www.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=61047

Mitchell (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) played football for the first time this past season. He played only basketball before, but had a solid year on the football field despite never playing.

Mitchell ended up being the leading receiver on a team that had four receivers have more 200 yards. He finished with 34 catches for 598 yards and nine touchdowns. Mitchell helped West Mesquite make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years in Overton's first season at the helm. West Mesquite went 8-3 and lost in double overtime in the first round of the playoffs.

I also see a community college corner as committed http://www.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=60659 ,but don't know much about him.

hmmm don't know why it put the frownies in there.....supposed to say his name

Sounds like a successful weekend! Two LB commits and a solid DE prospect. Now will Bustle and Co try to find another OL to replace McCants?

On Rivals.com it says that the DE Jermaine Rodgers Signed a Letter of Intent with UAB!! He had given us a Solid Verbal, but we all know that doesn't mean SQUAT until the pen and paper meet on a dotted line. Guess we're still hunting for a DE too!

That sounds like old news. He signed with UAB last year, but never enrolled (according to the article). Also the article said he has already enrolled at UL. So it appears he is already a Cajun!

Sorry for the mispost RaginFan2. I don't read the Daily Advertiser so I didn't check out the article. Just was going by what was on Rivals.com. Looks like we picked up a GREAT Scholar Athlete for the university. Hopefully Rodgers can pass his Underwater Basket Weaving Classes this year.

You know, that is the type of comment that turns potential recruits off. He signed with UAB, was not eligible and there was no scholarship available after they filled. He sat out and is signing this spring after enrolling. He is doing the same thing COX did. Did Cox have to take a basket Weaving course? We have universities in this state that sign eight to ten athletes a year that sit out. Another that has had tutors take test for athletes, it's not this program.
