Three years from now, if LaTech's offense has been bad, they'll fire Scelfo. (maybe before). Now let's say our offense has been great during the same period. What do you think our great offensive coordinator will say when Tech offers him 50K more than we're paying him???
I hope you are not attempting to justify his actions? If half of what is reported is true, he acted dishonorably... not financially clever.

How about we project another future scenario...

    Scelfo:
"Hey son, are you still going to honor your commitment to this school?"
    Youny Man:
"I think I shall take the path you did sir... I will play you like a fiddle and back out once I use you for what you are worth? Pretty clever huh coach?"

I make one point and one point only.

Why is it that Louisiana Tech can pay an offensive coordinator 150K and we can only pay one 95K?

Its no doubt true that we're better off without Scelfo, but over the long term, we're falling farther and farther behind in the collegiate athletics nuclear arms race. We're even falling behind schools we should at least be able to keep up with. If that isn't changed and changed quickly, Scelfo being a weasel is the least of our worries.

This Scelfo clown sounds like a real piece of work.

I hope your scenerio in Ruston come true, thanks to that arse-clown.

Hypothetically, what do you think our next offensive coordinator will say down the road if he is offered 50K more to dump us and go to work for LaTech?

Can I play this game too? Or, was this intended as a private email?

I think he will say "Well, after our 11-1 season, the bowl victory and the top 15 ranking, that kind of money isn't very motivating. UL just got a huge influx of funding from their incredibly re-energized fan-base, and the huge salary increase, coupled with the long-term contract, just makes it very difficult to come up there to Ruston and take over the mess that Dooley and Scelfo left you guys with. I appreciate the interest, but I really like it here, and Bustle and I would like to see how far we can go with this."

My crystal ball may be slightly tainted with optimism. But hypothetically speaking, if someone comes calling on our OC with more money, something has gone right... wouldn't you say?

You're right, things would be going better. However, if you think you can consistently fend off higher offers from other schools to keep coaches, you're living in a dream world. The vast majority of coaches will leave when you wave an additional 50K. That says nothing of what you can get for 95K for an offensive coordinator at a Div 1 school in this day and age. You're not going to be recruiting from the most sought after and highly thought of field of candidates. That's not to say you might not get lucky and find a diamond in the rough this time. But, you won't be able to do that consistently. Those with the cash will ultimately rule.

I don't think it is an ethical problem for someone to move on for a significant pay increase (or any other reason for that matter). It is just the manner in which Scelfo allegedly did it that is a big issue. Now, on the other hand, it is an athletic problem for UL if we continually have schools at or near our level waving much bigger salaries at coaches we have or want. It is different than if that is coming from a BC$ school. We can't compete in a bidding war with those schools.

The point I was trying to make is that Scelfo is the small or insignificant issue. The BIG issue is the overall money situation.

    This is the BIG issue:

Why is LaTech, a school we should be competitive with in all things, able to offer 50K more for an offensive coordinator? What can we do about that?

    That is the important issue.

They have a sugar daddy who basically funds their non state covered athletic department expenses. We need one too. One that can get along with Dr. Authement. Do you have anyone in mind?

That's only half true. It's not really one sugar daddy, it's more like a group of 5. However, during this coaching search, so benefactors that had given strictly to the academic side of things assured us that we would have whatever we needed.
